Yes. I'll be "stocking up" as much as possible and bringing parts to all of the contests I attend. I'll make sure I have some on hand.

Happy Memorial Day

I decided to give myself a gift for the holiday. A new Fr3aK. See, this is the first time I'm actually taking GOOD parts and assembling a model rather than taking leftovers, blems, repairs, and other stuff I can't sell to customers.

This particular airframe is using a spread tow AKP fuselage, the latest wing, and some of my new vlad carbon over rohacell test tails. AUW is 267g by my scale with the CG at 70mm.

Gear is a pair of the new ION DS57MG servos in the pod with Airtronics 802s in the wings, and an Airtronics 6channel FHSS3 receiver powered by 2S 350mah LiPOs and a homemade regulator / switchjack combination.

I'll be dropping more customer parts into molds over the next three or four hours, then heading off to trim fly this evening.

Love the new tails, Tom.

You have all the skills and resources to make even lighter tails that would still be strong. To get my Fr3aK to balance, I have to put ~21g of lead in the nose (1S lipo is very light). Sure would love some lighter tails!

By the way, have you done any more thinking about going to a 1-piece wing mold? In addition to the cosmetic benefit, you would get a much cleaner root joint, and more consistent seating of the wing root in the saddle (it took a fair bit of fiddling to get my 2nd wing seated square in the saddle...)

You got some early tails and if you ever want a set of lighter stuff, just say so. Wow 21g is alot of noseweight. Normally I use 5-6g with a 2S 350 pack, regulator, and two servos.

As far as a one-piece mold, yes I've done some thinking about it and have even taken it a step or two beyond that. You'll likely see a new wing design coming later this summer based on the same aero, meaning different construction technique but resulting in a wing with the same airfoil distribution, planform, washout, etc.

The two molds that are in production now were cut using primitive toolpathing compared to what I can do now. Fit and finish have been steadily getting better, but should take another leap with the one piece mold.

Along with the 13g battery and 2x188s puts the CG at about 74mm. Seems like that's a good spot for it, although most of my air time has been in windy/turbulent conditions, so it's a little tough to really feel it out.

I appreciate your continued offers of support to keep the early adopters up to date - but I think I'll spend some quality time with it as-is for now. It's definitely different from my other models, so I still have some bonding to do with it...

So if you add my power system (23g battery and 5g regulator) we're probably very close.

As you two are "bonding" if there's anything I can do to help just let me know. I am making up a set of camber templates this weekend and I think I'll try to make them downloadable so you guys can print, stick to a piece of balsa or ply, then cut out.

Having the correct camber settings makes a big deal for this airplane, the Steigeisen, and alot of other thinner models.

Two years ago tomorrow I was pouring tooling coats on my first ever wing mold... after making an MDF plug.

Only two years? Wow. That feels like a lifetime ago.

that plane is too cool Tom!
Did you paint the logo on the mould or after demoulding?
We're starting to paint the mylars, but looks like I will need to just spray on the logo on mine myself since we haven't started painting yet when we made my carbon wing

We're still aiming to get to your level of quality, maybe another 2 years or so for us. Keep up the good work and inspiration.

Wow Thanks.

I painted this one after demolding. I print a logo on printer paper, cut out the letters with a #11 blade, then spray the back side LIGHTLY with 3m77 and "stick" to the wing as a mask.

Use light coats of paint.

Looks decent close up, great from a few steps back.

Curious, did you have any ION DS57MGs in your plane at the BASS this past weekend?
Bye the way that last poker round was something to see. Err, with binoculars that is. Man, you were up in the clouds. Nice job.

Yep Tom, they were in the fuse on the Burgundy one. Thanks for that... I don't call big in Poker often but there was a pretty good read and I had a decent drop score so I wouldn't have been hurt much if I hadn't made it. That flight was scary and fun all at the same time.

I'm impressed so far by the D57MGs. Time will tell how good they really are but the four I currently have are great and I have more coming.
