A Locomotive story (video)

I was out serching for something to film yesterday as it was darn near perfect as far as weather goes, I was crossing a bridge, and a large orange object was gleeming from the sun over my left shoulder a mile or so away. It was like it was yelling...Here I am!!! I decided to to drive over and take a closer look and there were two older Train engines tucked under a cottonwood tree. It looked like a good test subject so I took the DSLR tricopter for a spin. I had the Gopro and a 12 oz ballast mounted up for this flight. I have been tweaking things to try and get usable 1080p footage and this is the best I have to date. I like the details of this mechanical beast

VIDEO Enjoy...

Nice video Mike. Good choice of music. Really captures the feel for the video. BTW, those are a couple of old switching locomotives. More pictures here:

Thanks guys

Mike, the lens is the stock Gopro at R5 setting 1080p. When you stay close to the subject with the 1080p setting you can hardly see and distortion/fisheye effect.

Outstanding video, Mike! When it involves trains, planes or sunsets, you have my attention every time! Just wish I could get my PC to buffer fast enough to keep up with the replay of the vid. One of these days, we are gonna have to sit down and organize a "Power Fly-In"!

Nice Video Mike.

Did you do it by hand or with FPV ?
One could see the shadow of the Tri very often. It is as it is. I personally find it disturbing, one of the things to keep in mind with these close ups...

How close was it in reality ? looks like under one meter...

I fly by sight, I still don't have the nerve to fly FPV (yet ) Honestly, I actually love seeing the shadow of the platform in the footage. For me, it adds another element. It combines hobby and subject. If I were to shoot video for someone I would probably keep my eye more closely on the sun angle.

How close? Great question, this is one thing folks kind of miss when watching a video of close subjects filmed with the Gopro. My props were literally inches from the train at times. I thought I was close to prop strikes several times. The wide angle lens rreally distorts just how close you really are. I feel one could get into trouble quickly flying FPV close in with the Gopro

Thank you for posting your video.

As well as rc flying, helis and soon to be quad, one of my other hobbies is n gauge trains, so your video combining both was a particular treat
