Build Log

USS Hoga YT-146 Tugboat 1:50 scale

I have started building the Pearl Harbor tugboat USS Hoga. This is my very first wood build so any tip and help is very appreciated.

So far I have made a motor mount and designed how the shaft (making it from an old antenna of a radio)

Hoga

proteque, so good to see someone starting a build on this Great Tug !
I live about 15 minutes from the real Hoga ( as the duck flies ), I am trying to save her, she is tied up to a ship that is part of the Ghost Fleet which is being destroyed.
I have not started my build of this kit ( Billings, yes ? ), it is in line.
I, and others who like the Woban Class Tugs, have posted many photos of this type of Tug, they are available to you.
I have pics of a Woban Tug that I have gone out on ( hope to go out tomorrow, the Mazapeta ), these inslude pics of the interior, engine room, pilot house, etc. if you are interested.
Believe me, we are watching....
The attached pics are of the Hoga.
See the brass knob in the center of ships wheel ?
this is POWER STEERING on off !
Push / pull.

Tim, I was just aboard the Shannon this morning, got some pics to post later. Of course, many modifications since 1945... but I hear that the owner has SCADS of photos going way back.

One of these YTB's could be interesting...

p.s.: Shannon hasn't been run in a couple years, and is for sale...

Proteque - There is a glass Hoga Hull

Loyalhanna Dockyard just obtained a mold for the hoga hull based on the 1/50 Billing Kit - the mold is up to the deckline and encorporates the use of the top of the frames for the decking and Bulwarks.

Just thought I would mention it - you may want to contact them.

Amazing Tim!! Thanx for the pictures! And indeed! I really want as many as I can get to get the modell as close to the real as I can. So don't worry about hijacking my buildthread! I try to get it in the shape it was when it was at pearl harbor! In its glory.

rlboats: Great. thanx for the tip. I may contact them if I fail at the wood build. But I want to give it a try first

And if anyone have sources for old pictures before modifications of Hoga that would be great. I have found the once at wikipedia and stuff found through google images. But they are lacking and from a distance mostly.

I have some small progress. Sorted out how to fit the servo and fastened the deck. Starting on the planking tomorrow. That will be interesting. My first planking

Pro, a lot of people who have to put a hatch on the stern of a tug like this will hide it under a coiled hawser or crates (although most tugs wouldn't have stuff like that in a working (deck) area).

A lot of hawser boats will have the hawser coiled on the aft deck on a box shaped stand. See below

Thanx for the tip. If I fail in getting it smooth with silicone and paint I will try to hide it with something indeed. But I have good hope I will be able to hide it. (silicone to make it easy to open again if I ever need to)

after planking the hull do I need to add fibre glass? Or is it enough to paint with epoxy some layers to get it waterproof? (I have never done this before so sorry my lack of knowledge)

Just like a real wood boat (or a piece of furniture), the planks will swell and shrink with humidity changes (it's not even necessary to put the boat in the water). Epoxy on the outside will not stop this, and it will not stop the planks from opening up.

If you want long life for your model, put fiberglass on the outside.

the section of chain in the video was just so the hawser wouldn't rub on the rail and stern? sitting on deck that seemed like a heck of a lot of line to use but once they had it paid out that seemed to be about the normal amount for a barge at sea....

Thank you patman! Another question (having some language problems related to buying the stuff I need). Is fill coat the same as gel coat?

Have I understand this right?
(when the hull is in the shape I want it to be)

1. epoxy primer - and let it dry.
2. fibre glass with epoxy resin.
3. When the epoxy is almost set I add a layer of fill coat (I am trying to figure out what this is.Is it gel coat?)
4. wait
5. success
