Had just as much trouble as you guys getting the cables to the tail wheel steering to be right. Found a training manual for the real P-47, and it doesn't have tail wheel steering. Only a lock for use during take off and landing

P-47 Startup, Ground Handling and Take off


Ham (and others),

Yes, I was interested to learn that the real P-47 does not have a steerable tail wheel. Instead it either swivels or is locked in line with the main wheels. The tail wheels is allowed to swivel while taxiing, with steering accomplished by rudder and brakes, then locked for take off or landing. Watch this video when you get a minute to see the whole start-up, ground handling and take off sequence.

P-47s in action during 1945


Here's another video featuring real WWII footage of P-47s that has an almost identical cockpit check sequence to the previous video, followed by some really exciting aerial sequences. The closing credits suggest this activity may have all occurred on one day in the spring of 1945. You get to see what 8x50 cals can really do. Great stuff!

Wow Aivar, your plane is FAST on 6s! I don't think I need quite that much speed, I'm happy with 5s on the 16x12 prop, but it is good to see than even more speed is possible with this airframe. If I had some 6s batteries on hand, I'd give it a try just to see.

Did you brace or strengthen the wing? That looked like some high g loading.

Where do you live?

Very impressive speed and power with your P-47. Sounds like you have achieved an optimal system for power and efficiency - witness the long flight times.

Source of Hardware - Retract Pins


I am just working on my landing gear to get ready for flight tomorrow and think I may want to have some replacement pins to go between the struts and servoless retract. This steel pin is 5mm in diameter by 30 mm in length. Does anybody have an idea on what is a good source for this piece of hardware?

Testing results at full throttle for four props on my P-47 equipped with Heads Up RC Firepower 80 sized motor. Dimensions 50 x 65 mm. Kv of 410. All tested with freshly charged 5000 mAh, 4S battery.

APC 15.5 x 12 x 4 33.5 amps, 511 watts
APC 16 x 12 x 2 27.1 amps, 426 watts
APC 17 x 12 x 2 30.5 amps, 475 watts
Stock 16 x 8 x 4 50.8 amps, 785 watts

Jackson, I like the data of that 4 blade APC 15.5 x 12 x 4. Should be a fast with that. Are you going to be able to try that out in the air any time soon? How does it look? Are you going to paint it black and put yellow tips? Please post some pics when you get it all set.

Hey Jose, we may have to try the 6s, that guy's plane was super fast, it looked like some little jet to me. I forget, are you using Dean's connectors? I'll need to make and adapter to XT60.

I buy motor shafts and cut them for pins.... (eg 4mm, 5mm)

For the landing gear pins, I'm using hardened steel music wire that I cut to length with a hacksaw. For 5mm I bought the SAE equivalent size, which is super close, they had it at my local hobby store. But next time, I'll try motor shafts like Peter suggests.

I've found that piano wire bends .... I don't have the equipment / care / ability to harden them correctly (despite trying).

I like the prop shaft idea (love RCG for new ideas)... I have resorted to using old screwdriver shafts of the right diameter... even cheap screwdrivers use correctly hardened shafts... Just take your micrometer to the hardware store !!

Here are my figures for the stock motor with 4S freshly charged... the numbers are peak...

Stock 16x10x4 ... 995W
TGS 16x10x2 ..... 543W
JM ... 16x12x2 .... 562W
TGS 17x8x2 ....... 455W

I've been using the 16x12x2 and have been very happy with the performance and thrust.
