I guess it depends on the ESC used. I'm running mine on Hobbywing Fentiums mainly, but I also have an older (red) unit running on a cheapo HK red-brick ESC. I've left all on the default timing and never had a problem so far.
Maybe its to do with pwm frequency (if it wasn't simply a manufacturing fault)? I've had edf make an alarming 'cough' before, which could do some damage, and that was down to poor esc programming on my part. I think mine is set to either 8 or 16khz, but can check (I left the redbrick with everything on default).

Very nice, is HobbyKing going to stock these 90mm EPF all alloy fans as well as the 64mm versions?

You know I pretty much always check out the HK Vids but the last one I saw before posting my question was the video just before the Mercury 90A!
Excellent!
I wanted to try a Lander Fan but this one looks more durable and also has interesting upgrade potential.

There's no comparison, these are far superior quality to lander. Only question mark is the price HK will sell for.

I just spoke with an EPF rep and he said they plan on releasing the 74mm Mercury in December.
