HELP me choose an airfoil design

Which is the better wing design? The top one which just cuts the rear 1 1/2" of the wing for an aileron but which leaves a sizable gap or the bottom one which just adds a flat 1 1/2" of foam to the rear edge for an aileron?

hoppy,
We might need a little more information to make a semi-educated guess. Is the wing straight or tapered? Strip or inset ailerons? Are you attempting a scale or semi-scale plane, or is it a one-off design? How much time do you want to spend building ailerons? I doubt that the answer is going to be black or white. As always, it's a collection of compromises.

Ok - It's a solid foam wing, straight, 8" chord, 30" length. It's for the HOOT, a KAOS takeoff. I don't want to spend a lot of building time on any one aspect. The plane is aerobatic, flies at medium speeds and weighs about 14oz. This one was made with the sheet foam ailerons.

Nice looking foamy. Because it isn't trying to look scale, I would go with the strip aileron. It's easier to build, easier to hinge, (packing tape) and is going to provide as much control as the tapered aileron. Every once in a while, we build for looks as well as flying, and that's when the tapered aileron is considered. Go with the flat strip. FWIW, I haven't had much success with foam ailerons. I prefer 1/8" balsa. Doesn't warp as badly as foam.

Hoppy,

How about this and use Tape on the top to hinge. You can also fold the aileron over and tape the bottom of the V.
