In For Review: Hobby Lobby Grob G103C ARF Sailplane

I just received this new project in for review a week or so ago. Hobby Lobby added a trio of new sailplanes to it's lineup and of the three, the Grob is the most exciting looking one IMO! Notable features include electric spoilers and an included power system. The composite construction fuselage is of very nice quality. Full specs below (from Hobby Lobby web site):

Grob G103C ARF w/Electronic Spoilers and Power System Specs:
  • Wingspan: 109-3/8 in.
  • Length: 49-3/8 in.
  • Wing area: 914 sq. in.
  • Flying Weight: 85 oz. (with battery)
  • White gelcoated fiberglass fuselage
  • Sheeted foam wings w/genuine Oracover
  • 3223 Brushless Outrunner motor 1200kv, 5mm shaft
  • 45A Brushless ESC
  • 13x6 Carbon filled prop blades

HL fixed the link to the PDF Manual. 2200 is minimum and 3200maH recommended.
A friend just ordered one and will be helping build soon.
HL was out of the HS125 MG servos and the HS-85 servos. we may be looking for alternative servos.

This sailplane looks very interesting I am not that experienced but have flown the Radian for a year now and was thinking that this might be a good option for the next project. I expect to still learn on the Radian for some time but after catching a good thermal a few weeks back the idea of having spoilers to loose altitude seemed to be a good idea and the added size for visibility also seems like a plus. I notice that there are no replacement parts offered I wonder if they might be made available in the future or if repairs are the only option, not a problem but just curious.

Hi Bajora,

Do you know if any of HobbyKings pilots are the correct size/seating position to fit the G103?

My HL Grob will be here around the end of this week.

Tabasco,

It is more of a blog entry than a thread.

There is no" reading between the lines" to be done here, sorry mate.

I have been watching the other Grob threads but since mine is still not in the air, I can't comment on how it flies. I have several other projects that I am finishing up and then this one will get my undivided attention.

Full review to come.

I did order one of the HK pilots for it Joe. I think he will be a pretty decent fit, not 100% perfect, but the price is right for sure.

Yeah, BIG problems! I just cannot get the pilot to get out of the "tub"! If the lazy sunuvagun would towel off, I could finish the build and get it in the air!

The goofy look on the pilots face suddenly made perfect sense when I saw him relaxing in the bath.
