Rules Corner - Tacking at the Weather Mark

Here is a good rules lesson from our Sail Points races this month..... The take-away is be very careful about approaching the weather mark on port and tacking within 4 boat lengths of it. (The area called the zone). If you do so you forfeit most of your right of way and become a sitting duck for others who did not tack.

enjoy,
Ken

While I agree with most of your interpretation, I don't see how you are exonerated from touching the mark. Rule 18.5 only exonerates from breaking a rule in Section A or rule 15 or 16. "Touching a mark" is covered under rule 31.

You are correct... I should have cited rule 64.1(c), which does provide exoneration when someone breaking a rule causes you in turn to break a rule.

But does rule 64.1(c) apply if there was not a protest filed? (in this case against the white boat).

I'll admit I'm a bit rusty on the rules and not clear on this.

64.1.c exoneration cannot just be assumed. It can only be granted by a protest committee in a hearing; even if the other boat took a penalty for not providing mark room.

The best way to avoid this is to modify R 31 in the SI to look like the old (2004) version of R 31.

I could not find a copy of the SI for the series on the San Diego Argo web site. Is there a series SI? If there is not a set of SI, then by default, the rules are what is in the standard RRS and Appendix E.

The good news is that the proposed changes to the RRS for 2013-2016 include this exoneration again. We, the RC community asked for this change by including it in Appendix E, but it sounds like it was taken as a good idea that the full size sailing rules will also adopt it.

Not too bad. You'll have to put another couple hundred into it at least to update the electronics and such, so should be into boat for less than $800.

Love the S/B's with the deckhouse and cockpit.

Memories...!

How nice, to see yacht #560, looking just as it did, back there in 1970, when we built her!
My Santa Barbara, (hull #2), and my wife's, (hull #8), were lost in a big wild fire in 2009, which wiped out everything we had acquired in 48 years of living at that address. Those S/Bs last sailed at the San Francisco model yacht club's Centennial celebration, in 1998.

How sad to lose your boats and possesions in a fire. I take it you worked for Vortex model engineering? Ryan
