Build Log

Skeleton Cartoon Albatros D.V. LRF... FINALLY FINISHED!

Hi

I had been planning this build since last month(I had final exams!) so it's about time...

for now I have finished the top wings and the horizontal stab. the bottom wings will be next.

WS: 8.5"
covered with tissue as we don't have any mylar here.

I'm still not sure about the electronics... should I put a Kyosho brick in it OR Silverlit Palm-Z guts?

Well you can't have cartoon WWI without the Albi, can you?

enjoy!

Nice work. You may want to use the Palm Z guts. I suspect the brick will be too heavy for an 8-inch span bipe.

More progress! (why doesn't anybody like my threads?)

Thanks Mr. Johnson!

I have made more progress on this build:

finished the bottom wings and added aileron and elevator lines...

1.16g at the moment so I'm hoping for an AUW of 5.5g with palm-Z guts.

enjoy!

EDIT: pics posted!

Finished the plane and did the Jasta-18 paint scheme and tested it several times with the Palm-Z guts but it wouldn't fly good even though it flew slow. I looked closely and I found the problems:
1. The horizontal stab is too floppy for stability.
2. The AOA of the wings is too much so the plane would constantly stall no matter where the CG was. Changing the elevator position didn't help.

So what can I do to resolve the problems?
Make the horizontal stab in 1 piece so I don't need to shave it thin to save weight. Also I need to give the wings less AOA and move the CG a bit back.

The fuselage and the vertical stab got so "broken" that I removed the wings and I crushed the fuse. Now working on making a new fuse and the stabs.

Hi again!

Updates:

Built a new horizontal stab which is more skeletonized than the last one and covered it in "shoebox tissue" and colored it with my sharpies (great for light weight!)

I also cut out the fuse but haven't covered it yet. That will be next and after that comes the vertical stab.

So what do you think?

I"ll tell you why we don't like your threads. Because we all thought of doing the same kind of build and you had to go and post it first and steal our thunder. That's why! Then you had to make it look really good, and show us all up! Starscream your build is excellent . I look at your model and say wow.... there is a lot of possibilities there. Now Gordon has someone nipping at his heels. Great Job, keep it up.

Hi again!

Thanks MUTCAKE! At least somebody liked my thread!
Well I thought you can't have WWI cartoon scale without the Albi! But the question is... Who's going to build the Sopwith Triplane?

Yesterday evening I covered the fuse and "sharpied" the Jasta-18 paint scheme on the fuse but the bird on the fuse doesn't like sharpies!

Next I glued on the vertical and horizontal stab and the bottom wing and I am now working on attaching the top wing to the fuse... Any Ideas? Should I use balsa or foam or toothpicks?

I'll post pics soon!

SS

EDIT: Pics added! ENJOY!

EDIT2: the plane didn't have a vertical stab when I took the pic but now it does!

YAY! now two people and a plane like me!

Hi AGAIN!

I finally finished the plane and tested it......

WOW this thing is the slowest plane I've ever flown! It can do TIGHT slow turns about 3ft radius or less! It's awesome!

Time to change the title of this thread!

the only problem is that it doesn't have a spinner...

I'll post pics tomorrow!

you should do a spinner like the old Roadkill airplanes, they were just a thin outline in a + sign with a back plate. on yours it could maybe be made out of depron or balsa.

pics of it finished would be cool too

hmmm...I guess the "updated" thread Title did this...

Hi again!

Thanks guys!

Akwardflyer, I'm sorry to say that I can't make a vid for a LRF.

Derk, thanks for the idea. I think I'll make one out of EPS foam.

Well here is the pic!

Enjoy!

Starscream,

Very Nice!!

I have been looking at the skeletonized framework and can't tell if it's cut with a knife or laser. The fuse appears to be hand cut, but the tail parts appear to be laser cut. Which is it? Also, what type and thickness of foam are you using?

Boy, would we like to see a video!!
