I know Bill ... I was referring to that very pic in my question. Did you cut the wires in this example?

If not ... should one ever cut the motor wires in order to get it closer? (I think I read somewhere that's it's a "no no" to cut motor wires? )

Cutting motor wires is not a good idea, each strand is individually insulated (that browny/red coating on em), so if you cut them youll have to remove the insulation from every single strand to be able to resolder them. It has been done, but I wouldnt

Cutting esc wires is fine BTW.

On some motors the wire can be tinned a few centimeters, remove the shrink tube and you will see if they are. If not, just put new shrink tube on. If so, they can be cut a little, but I dont recomend it.
Every micro ohms count, right?...

As mentioned... Cut esc wires only. Simply test fit "before" cutting. A "few" brave souls have soldered the motor leads directly to to esc...I'm not that adventurous.

Really? I had gotten the impression that it was standard procedure to do it that way with hotliners and pylons ... I guess because I've always seen the motor/esc so close and everthing is covered in heat shrink.

So ... I'm assuming that you would use bullet connectors to connect the motor to the esc as in any "regular" (non "high performance") installation?

P.S. Good thing I asked ... I was about to do just that! (solder motor leads directly to the esc)

The motor leads are rather stiff... no? Wouldn't that lack of flexibility lead to the possibility of mechanical stress on the solder joint?

Colin, No, I mean directly to the esc board/poles (no esc leads at all). This is done by a few, but not recommended.

Ok so just to confirm ... the preferred method IS to solder the motor leads directly onto the "shortened" esc leads, correct?

I agree, it seems losing the "flex" wouldn't be good. But for those few that do it...there's likely a solution for that also.

Well, I got flights number #3 & 4 in with the X-Plane. I pretty uneventfull launches, and great flying.

One of my other planes (2M Weasel) didn't fair so well

Knowing I had to get right back on the horse, I flew the "X" once more after making a big hole in the ground with this one.
