HobbyKing P51D 1.2M KIT VERSION

Hi Flying guys

I ordered me this KIT from Hobbyking Germany and want to share my findings with you all.
First off all the KIT is very well packed and was very quick delivered at home.
The manual which is included is really a shame to put in such a box.
Most of all it talked about the RTF version but it says P-51 KIT quick Flight Manual.
For someone how never build such a plane together it will be very difficult to perform but for more experience guys it will be no problem.
Also I read at Hobbyking forum not too use included glue, instead use 5 min. epoxy.
And make the parts which will be glued together clean with sanding paper.
See also pictures

Will be updated.

09-06-2011

SERVO CONTROL ISSUES

Well I tested servo control and smoke came out if it.....
Removed servo control form fuselage and I noticed that power lines are wrongly connected in factory...what the F&^%^$&$*
So Servo control is useless, I mailed Hobbyking about this issue and will see how they handle this I keep you informed.

Today 11-06-2011 i received mail from HK to fill in RMA form and send it back for warranty claim.

update 24-06-2011 HK informed me they received my defective Unit and gonna test it so......!?

update 30-07-2011 HK informed me that part is at supplier and waiting for replacement................

HobbyKing Mustang 1.2m building

Hoi flying guys

Building Mustang P51D.

Placed metal servo's for Rudder and Elevator.

Also for me plastic plate broke so I removed it and used wood instead.

I 'm sanding all parts that should be glued together.

And also I noticed that rear steering wheel will not fit easily in rudder so I replaced tube by a bigger one so its fits really nice.

Main wing I noticed that in one wing hole is missing for stabilization rod.....

So I have to make it perfectly aligning with rod.....

After that I will glue wing together with 5 min Epoxy.

enough for today.

Good job Timmy!!!!...... too bad about only one hole in your wing half....nice quality control hey!.... Oh well its cheap and HK even sells spare parts for this plane.

I have about 10 flights on mine so far.... what a joy to fly... very smooth and stable...

I did manage to brake the plastic piece on one landing gear,so for now i pulled both landing gear off and just hand launch it and belly land.... I also removed all the sliding canopy components which totaled 50grams in weight...

Good luck with the rest of your build!

HobbyKing Mustang 1.2m building

Hi Flying guys

When making hole for rod in main wing I used a bore to make it and when I gently drilled it with hand because of foam I found that tube was installed in wing?????
Anyway after doing this I glued wing together wit 5 min Epoxy and it looks great.

After that I started for my aileron servo's and with my xmtr setup which I also use for my other planes I noticed that servo's are going wrong way haha.
So I reversed both servo's internal and now they work as they supposed to do.

The main connector for wing is easy to use, both aileron and landing gear cables are conncted with this.

Installed in wing and tested them and its OK

glued plastic plate for main wing bolt and now I have to wait for my motor and servo control unit.

Probably I will fly Mustang with gear up and hand launch it like Mavrick1111 is doing because grass field where I'm flying will not work for this plane....!

HobbyKing Mustang 1.2m building

Hi flying guys

I couldn't wait for my new motor so I used my 3536-910KV for testing.

For people looking for right motor for this plane it should be this size..
I ordered me also one with 1000KV because of prop adapter I hope it will fit on that one?????
Wanted too know power settings.....

Well first of all I used a
11E8,5 prop.
2200/3s zippy LIPO
40A Turnigy Plush ECS

So my static trust was 1220 Gram, weight of plane is around 1320 Gram.
For me personaly I like static trust at least the same reading as weight of plane.
With watt meter I got around 240 Watt.

As you can see on pictures below.

greetings Hans

I decided to lighten the load on her and removed the sliding canopy components.
It shaved off 50grams.

HobbyKing Mustang 1.2m building battery compartment modification

Hi flying guys

I decided this morning to modify my battery compartment to be able to put in 4s2650LIPO also
I found that power with 3s2200LIPO isn't enough ore just good for cruising.

So I started to cut foam away and after I fitted in LIPO I tested CG.
CG wasn't at 90mm and I find P51 nose heavy.

So I had to remove foam towards canopy to get CG right.
Reglued foam front of battery compartment and battery hatch.

After that I checked CG and it right on the 90mm point which I think will be the exact CG point.

Also I measured static trust with my 4S2650LIPO, prop 11E8,5

1630 gram of trust flying weight 1430 gram
with watt meter I got 455 watts ( 30A, 15,16V )
Motor is rated for max 470 watt so within spec.

Battery hatch I strengthen with 5 min epoxy.

So when weather and time is there I will perform my first test flight.

Keep you up to date.

greets Hans

HobbyKing Mustang 1.2m building almost done

Hi flying guys

Well my P51d Mustang almost is ready to fly.
I have to wait for my servo control unit which burned out when testing it and hopefully HK will replaced this by a new one?!?!?!?

Just some pics form P51 before first flight haha.

Maybe someone else also noticed that markers on top of wings are at bode sides and normaly it should be on at top and one at bottom...............

anyway we will see how this bird will fly finally.

20-06-2011 first flight with P51D 1200mm

Hi Flying guys

Today 20-06-2011 was a perfect day for test flying.
First I flew with 2200/3S Lipo 11E8.5 prop and 3536/910KV motor.
Well as I suspected she flies with this setup but only very slow and at full throttle.
CG is around 90mm and she is very stable and easy to fly.

Second I flew with my 2650/4S Lipo and this is a real joy for flying this plane.
Cruising at 60% full throttle and enough power for flying this bird .

Only at full power my spinner left the plane, probably with one landing it got a bit broken because spinner is of plastic and holes for screws are very thin....
So spinner needs an update haha
CG is also around 90mm and I found Mustang flying really well and with landing very smooth and stable.

HobbyKing P51D 1.2M Mustang (5 min 9 sec)

My landing gear is not working because of servo control unit burned out, is at HobbyKing for warranty claim.

Also motor I ordered at RCTimer arrived today but prop adapter doesn't fit and needs an modification also.

greets Hans

Hi Timmy,
I have the same problem as you with the servo control board. I did make it work right and when I wanted to fly the plane, after 3 weeks, it burned out. What a piece of crap!
Tell me, have you been able to get from HK the replacement part as warranty?
Do you know any other way to make the landing gear work?
There is a motor near each wheel and I tried to make them work applying some voltage (from 5 to 12V CC) but the did not move. Maybe they are using more voltage.
If we can not get any satisfactory answer from HK then we will have to finbd our way to make them work. Canopy: I will leave it fixed, not movable.
Please let me know.
Ernesto
