Careful!

New HD camera: now we have a winner !

Six months later edit: this was a review I started in a very negative mood in the summer of 2011, you will see below why, and still worth a reading, to know how to not buy the V1 instead V2, by mistake.
To read directly about V2, the winning version of this camera, jump at page 18.

Below is the original review of V1 RD32 camera.

Today HK posted the wonder camera they make so much buzz in the last month in their forums, and Bruce too promised something never seen so far.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=17200

Well, I am very disapointed to see that it is an uncased version of the camera I already hoped to be a GoPro killer, and reviewed here:

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1417055

I identified this camera being manufatured by two companies so far, even if both label it as Redleaf RD32 Spearhead. The two companies and corresponding product pages are:
http://redleaf154167.en.ec21.com/RD3...6_4838703.html
http://www.winait.com/sdp/316052/4/p..._video_ca.html

Mine was from Winait, but I am sure it's the same product, because came packed in a case labeled RD32 Spearhead, exactly as seen on the internet for Redleaf product.
Also, Redleaf sent me a video sample, and image is the same (awful) quality.

You have attached PCB pictures of my sample, so you can verify it's the same sold by HK. The specs from HK and those manufacturers pages match 100%.
The image (lack of) quality from Winait sample can be seen here:
http://exposureroom.com/members/rena...e66fbf49ff616/
The original can be downloaded.
A Redleaf sample can be seen here:
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjMyOTc0MzAw.html

It was some weeks on foxtechfpv site, for $109, and then removed.
It is sold also now on dealextreme for $77.

The camera does not outputs video during recording ! Only for playback.
Later edit: I was wrong about the above, not enough forensic. See post #11 why and how.

A summary booklet of image processor datasheet is attached also, for those interested. Also, the user manual as jpg images, because pdf manual is bigger than 3M, maximum allowed to attach. A link to the manual on foxtech site (5M download):
http://www.foxtechfpv.com/product/rd...al-EN-v1.0.pdf

These said... you were warned, buy on your own risk

One week later, Bruce review, same note:

It happen that you know the bitrate? 720p it's not that bad if it came with some details...

Download the original AVI file from exposureroom, and analyse it.
It's encoded MJPEG with some 7Mbs or so, enough, but... if the input is garbage, who care the bitrate of output?

7mbs it's not nearly enough for a HD movie.. but considering the price and size I'll stick with you - it's a nice try But not a GoPro killer as I saw the movie sample and it's worse then I thought, the apperture works very slow, the colors are... anyway nevermind. For the price is an option!

You read too much pro reviews about 25mbps rates. 7Mbps IS enough for 720p 30fps.
The cameras we use for does not have the sensors and glass on par even with consumer camcoders.
If you record two movies using an Aiptek, at 9Mbps and 5Mpbs, I challenge you to show me the difference, at 30 fps.

You replied yourself why I want a gopro killer
Because that FOV is awful for me, it's not proper shaped for our purpose, and overpriced.
Isn't this world still led by competition? I see in various fields more and more people ready to proclaim that a product it's the end of the evolution, and must satisfy everyone needs ! This is not gopro for sure !

Camer CAN outputs composite video during recording ! (but...)

but You must switch to motion detection mode (10 min. is best).
Of course after 10min. I have litle (1 sec) pause in video (I using this cam for FPV).
sample:
RD32 test video (1 min 1 sec)

average video data stream is 20Mb/s (codec MJPG ,1280*720 30fps) /Info from VLC media player/

The 10 min break means a new file also ?
Or it continue to save in the same file ?

In the attached picture you can see the stats of the AVI posted on exposureroom

That's all about WHY you'll want to produce a movie.. just because you can? Or because you want to SEE something from above, to admire the nature from a bird's point of view, to enjoy the colors, forms, rivers, hills, etc? Or perhaps you just want to taste the feeling of a pilot flying FPV... But if your answer is (like mine) to SEE things God blessed us with them around, things worthing to be saw, then you need DETAILS. Even for FPV you need'em! And there IS a difference between 5 an 9 mbps (almost double), of course, but it needs good eyes because both are crap
Roughly speaking, 9Mbps = aprox 1MBps and @30fps, 1 frame= 33KB. If you take 1 shot with a good camera at 1024/720px and compress it JPG to match the 33KB size, you'll have a picture to compare, very poor in quality but still a thing you may call it picture. Now, repeating the brute calculation, for 5Mbps you must compose the same 1024/720px jpg @18KB size. Much more compressed, the details are even poorer and you leave behind the very reason you started all this. I definetly cannot enjoy a clip taken with that camera, take a look at it what annoying it can be, I can't feel the nature pace trying to guess what's there, overexposing the sky, underexposing the earth, etc. You get the point!
