"SMALL" scale gliders?

It certainly seems to be the trend for scale R/C gliders to keep getting bigger and bigger, but, does anyone know if you can get small scale R/C gliders (in the region of 4ft wingspan). Years ago I saw a small Minimoa which was around 3.5 - 4 ft span, I believe it was a European kit but don't know any more than that. Small scale modern gliders would be great too, I am also led to believe that EMS in Germany did a small Discus.

There is a good forum on the retroplane site for mini-scale gliders, normally 1/10 scale which for most puts them in the 4 to 5 feet span category.

I have scaled several gliders to size 1/15, they can be found here. Those (PDF) plans are for making silhouette indoor gliders from depron or thin balsa. They do not include details for radio etc. stuff, but anyone interested in indoor aerotow propably already does not need help on that area.

1/15-scaling results typically 1m ie. 3-4ft. I am slightly sceptical whether that size planes are practical if they would be built to last outdoor use. Have to say that in scale soaring bigger is really better.

There are some smaller kits (under 2M) available here:

It is really, really sad, but it says (at the bottom of the replikit) page;

>Last orders for REPLIKIT will taken on Wednesday 27th April 2011
>
>Replikit will Close on the 30th of April 2011 until the NEW owner re-opens it.

Missed that. Darn! Hope someone takes the plunge and accepts the business challenge. They have [had] lots of interesting kits.

I've been working on plans for a vampyr at a very small size for AR6400 gear.

While not as spectacular as 4 to 6 meter gliders I expect to be able to catch very small thermals of the type we were afraid of flying free flight rubber scale.

This looks interesting too:

http://www.theplanpage.com/esp/schglider.htm

Edit: someplace around here I've got nice full sized plans for a Wolf glider from an old Model Airplane News. It was free flight, about 30 inch span and just a bit too narrow in the fuse for AR6400 gear. Enlarging the plans to about 36 inch span should provide room for the gear.

Wolf Hirth brought this glider to the USA to demonstrate thermal soaring using a vario.

It's on my list. I built the fuse about thirty years ago. It's still in my flying buddy's house, so I know it's just a bit too small as is.

Good find,

Sussex has plenty more great looking semi-scale gliders which could be adapted to r/c-gear with ease. Kadet, Tutor, Swallow, Skylark etc.

I really think that those miniature gliders are cute as bug's ear and they are worth effort. That said, I think personally that the beauty is best brought to light in built up structures, like those westwings etc. kits. (I do not like styrofoam...).

I have designed an 5,5m & 2,75m glider, PIK-3c. And just had an crazy thought. I could quite easily scale that design to ~1,4m size, just by using 2,75 size kit as an starting point. It has simplified design and the wood sizes were already designed to be scaled. ie. main formers from 4mm -> 2mm and fuz. stringers 4mm -> 2mm etc. If there is enough interest and an willing (& able) beta builder I can do design & arrange cutting etc. If interested pls. contact me via pm. However, I think that it could be flyable in slope, but totally hopeless in thermik. But... still nice looking .
