Flew BArrys Maxa this last weekend

Got some time on the Barry Kennedys Maxa at Visalia.

We spent an hour or so setting it up on Thursday (from zip starts) and it was impressive. Didn’t have enough time to fine trim all the flight modes, but didn’t seem to need it. It just went up. Brendon B and Connor L were hand launching it on Sunday after the event and they didn’t have any difficulty hooking up and going out.

After reading this thread and others I was concerned that the build quality may suffer because of the light weight. My concerns were unfounded after some flying and watching it over a four day period in a lot of direct sunlight and heat over 90 degrees. I did not see any warping or twisting of the wing or the control surfaces.

Some were claiming that the fuse is flimsy, but that is not what I saw or experienced. The fuse seems every bit as strong as a Supra Pro and the whole plane only weighs 60 ounces.

The launch was as steep as anything I have seen and the wing flex appeared to be less than what I have experienced with my Supra Pros (all fiberglass for that 57 ounce feeling). I watched the launches but did not launch myself so it is difficult to comment on the flaps off through the zoom phase.

The plane handles very well. This is a great “pucker flight” model. Because of its great handling, it is easy to fly, close to the ground at a distance.

There are some other 4M aircraft out there (I own one) that have a tip stall issue if turning too tight at too low an airspeed. Every plane will stall in this situation, but the real issue is how does it recover? The Maxa was much more of a challenge to force it to tip stall and when it did, it was soft and easy to recover.

The pilot that makes the fewest mistakes wins. An airplane with a larger envelope, especially in the low end, will result in a pilot that makes fewer mistakes. An airplane that hides your mistakes by making recovers soft and easy helps even more. The Maxa’s big low speed envelope along with the ability to hide a pilots mistakes will make a typical average pilot a better pilot.

Although my time on this airplane is limited, so far it was more impressive than I thought it might be.

That $2600 price is the only thing holding me back.

So, whats the buzz?

Been quiet here lately

Anyone flying the Maxa seriously yet?

How does a Maxa go compared to say the Icon2s at Visalia, or other toys in Europe?

Any information gobbled up immediately

There was one flying at Visalia, I thought it was Ben Clerx flying it.
That's all that I know.

My statement, carefully worded, is still accurate, and needs no editing....

There WAS one flying at Visalia (there could have been more), and I THOUGHT it was Ben flying one (I could have been mistaken).

Truth be told, I was too busy making my times (in Unlimited) to pay attention.... ;-)

Only because of the skill of my timer!! I felt like a blind man regaining his sight. Best time I've had at Visalia in all the years I've been going.

Now if I would spend some time practicing landing I'd be worthy of having TW time for me.

BTW, I got my times flying an antique (1 year old) full carbon lead sled 79 ounce Aspire.

And I am still not sure what Ben was flying at Visalia!!

I guess I asked for it

...so I take it then that you guys have fun irrespective of the intent of the question. Easy to see why people like me are considered aliens . we just don't understand.

or is it too soon for anyone of consequence to successfully use a Maxa?
