I should have formed that in a question lol.
Good luck on the next try.

Just an Earth bound misfit - I

I had a similar problem to Kakofonix about a month ago. Aircraft was close to me in range and it browned out.

First the flight controls locked up then the ESC shut down. But the damage was miimal. When I got to the plane the link light was flashing and I had full control again.

I too had extensively range tested, and had been flying this aircraft for at least 10 flights and sometimes to the limit of visual range. But when it quit - it was about 100 yards away??

I've yet to figure out if it was the Rx or the BEC but I'm leaning more toward a BEC problem than a Rx issue. I bet Kakofonix is having the same issue since his problems didn't start until he went to 4S. The extra voltage may be too much for the BEC to regulate, it gets hot, and shuts down...???

It should fly at least once

This certainly could be the problem especially if the bec is a linear regulator and not a switch mode.
With linear regs the extra voltage is changed in to heat and will shut down the reg very quickly if the cooling is not good and will still shut down early if the ESC is being pushed as well adding to the heat problem.
I will only use switch mode external BEC's for all my aircraft or on board esc bec in a cheap don't care foamy.
The switch mode bec is very much more efficient and does not get hot just because the voltage has gone up.
They are cheap and a much better and safer bet.

Just bought a HET6404 and a Hoffman MightyMite 60. I already have the Cyclone TurboJet in the Stinger and it goes on 4S!! So what set-up does everyone think is gonna have the best top speed???

the BEC was a TURNIGY 3A UBEC w/ Noise Reduction
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Reduction.html
I use it on many of my aircrafts without problems so far
I even use it on my 90mm edf MB339 @ 6S lipo

after crash I quickly disconnected the battery, so I didn't check the leds on it, and haven't check esc and bec for any heat problems
I can only make guesses what caused the brownouts

Do you fly near any radio/ phone masts, or are you flying between distant microwave dishes? Any of these can affect RC planes.
Is your radio equipment in need of a service perhaps?
Is the Rx a genuine Spektrum unit, or is it a Chinese clone?

erratic flying

I flew my Stinger yesterday and it started to do some funny stuff.
I had a minor crash when it decided to take a dive by itself.
I checked the plane and looked ok so I tried for a second time and it started to do some erratic movements so I landed it. Maybe a servo stripped.
Took the plane apart to "iron" the nose and when I took the Futaba R617FS receiver out I felt like the plugs were a little loose for my taste.
I am going to make sure the receiver stays put and so the plugs and that the servos are ok and then report back my findings.

Firstly, thanks to The Don for his motor/fan suggestions.

If I lived in the USA and not half a world away probably would have ordered one.
Had another order to complete with Philip @ PW-RC. Sticking with 3S and ordered a Cyclone Power Turbojet 64 3S EDF 4500kv Power Unit(dynamicly balanced).

Should give the extra power I'm seeking.

I'll report once installed and tested.

Running the stock setup on 4S, is it the motor or the ESC that usually fails first?

Thanks

6S heli motor

I have this brand new Outrage 6S 1700kv outrunner motor from a 450 size heli I have not built.
It has a 3x15mm shaft, it is about 2mm wider and 9 longer than the stock motor.
Has anybody installed a motor like this or similar?

6s 1700kv beginning of flight (4.2v per cell):
6 x 4.2v = 25.2v
25.2 x 1700 = 42,840rpm

6s 1700kv end of flight (3.6v per cell):
6 x 3.6v = 21.6v
21.6 x 1700 = 36,720rpm

4s 4500kv beginning of flight (4.2v per cell):
4 x 4.2 = 16.8v
16.8 x 4500 = 75,600rpm

4s 4500kv end of flight (3.6v per cell):
4 x 3.6 = 14.4v
14.4 x 4500 = 64,800rpm

Hoffman motors were discontinued at a point but now they are back in production.
They are amazing motors. Way ahead of their time where you ciuldn't find a battery to handle the power. I got 2330watts on a 70mm het fan. On 5s
I cant wait to see tge 64mm but again I dont know who makes them now and if they are of the same quality and power as the first ones..
If you can please post a video and or some numbers.
But make sure you got a good battery fot that small thunder. The extra weight of the motor will also help on balancing the plane with the 4s
