Stinger's new 3s upgrade.

Fitted the Cyclone Power Turbojet 64 3S EDF 4500kv Power Unit(dynamicly balanced) received from PW-RC($60 to AUS)

After upgrading to Turnigy 40amp ESC, tested on wattmeter, showing at static after 15 seconds 360watts at 32 amps using a 3s1800mAH 30-40c battery.
Picked up about 14% extra power on stock, whilst not huge it is noticable. The main difference is that the new unit is very quiet and sounds super smooth. The unit is some 40grams heavier than stock so with that extra weight aft, also allows a larger battery if required up front. I though really like the feel with the 1800mAH.

Overall happy with the upgrade on 3s and have the option to run on 4s with this combo

I now mainly run it on Zippy compact 4S 1800's. FAST on that!

hey guys, been looking at these airframes for long time. did a short skim of the thread. i have some dons setups and might use 1 here. have any of u guys had the freewing f86 and or f9f to compare airframes to this ? i have both the warbirds and was hoping this airframe might be a bit cleaner , looks like it would be, but the stinger is a bit heavier. if , using the same power set up i would get 10-15 mph over the fighters i will get one, if u dont think i will gain much i will just stick w/ the f9f/f86.

any and all input appreciated ,

chuck.

I flew a few packs in the Stinger tonight with the 4000 KV Wicked Dons motor, what a blast!! A nice little hotrod!

Started to get a good feel on how the Stinger handles. Using restraint to not order another one for back up. At 84 dollars shipped I don't know how long I can hold out.......

Got mine in the air today also with Dons 4000kv motor. I finally enjoyed flying this jet now that it has the power it was always missing.

No2 update

Ran the hk lander 64 alloy edf up on 4s today, surprising 750watts 49 amps, felt strong holding the plane. Only got dualsky 40 esc so pushing it, 430w 33a on 3s 2200 that's plenty of go.
No2 is almost up for the maiden flight. Gws64 erc2445 tgy60a esc 2700mh4s, makes reliable 600watts. Pics of mods.

G'Day lads, just ordered my Stinger in blue from the HK aussie warehouse, She'll be here this week. I also placed an order for a 1800mah 3S 40C. having read through this forum (from page 1!) it seems as though this should be fine for both the stock setup and the EDF newbie at the sticks. Does anyone have a recommended CG for a 1800mah 3S? Any other tips for my pending maiden would be very much appreciated!

cheers

Glow? What is that?
Cg should remain at 70-72mm regardless of batt used.

Agree on the CG ... have flown half a dozen flights on 70-72mm using 2200mah 3S setup. Inverted almost hands-off and loops are pretty easy ... battery size and weight doesn't matter ... 2200 2S gives more than 5min of flight time (running at 80% WOT, I still have about 700mah left after 5min).
Enjoy!

First drop the aileron rate and move the rods from the end hole on the servo to the middle one at least if not the closest in hole, stinger rolls really fast but don't fly it too slow when banking or pulling the nose up. 70-72mm cog is ideal. Nice battery, light auw is best. It will fly at 925g with 4cell but landings are at a much faster speed. Have a great time, full throttle (wot) and throw it hard and flat for your launch, set the elevators up by 4 clicks trim and 2 to right on aileron helps not to nose it in.

Ran my erc2445 gws fan today on 2700mah 65c 4s, wow 65amps 1050watts that's to much for this motor, words of wisdom from Mark at extremerc, so my 925g setup is on a diet to a 2200mah 40c batt. Might remove the lander motor out of the first stinger and install a 69mm highmark fan, same as wemo and 1w30 to handle this 65c battery.

I give up

ran the Stinger on 4 cell, took off great flew around for a few minutes, flew it up a bit and about 100 metres away. Suddenly lost all control and it started nose diving toward earth, seemed to get a bit of control back, but lost it.
Long story, but couldn't find it. Sent my Corsair up with a camera, taking pics every 2 seconds and managed to find it in a paddock.
Really wasn't worth finding after nearly four days. Battery was still at 62% and cells were evenly balanced. Plugged another battery in and it fired up normally, everything worked ok.
Was this the dreaded orange receiver letting me down again or ESC shutting down and losing all power to the receiver? I have now bought original Spektrum receivers for all my planes and gliders.Name: PICT0081.jpg

Bummer, but cool that your "search and rescue" was successful to at least salvage the electronics.
Were you using a "satellite" with the Orange RX?
Last weekend at the field a guy lost all control of his FPV rig at about 500m. He was using a $60 Futuba RX....

Yes i was using the satellite as i have with the 3 planes that have crashed. I haven't had a problem with the genuine Spektrum receivers with satellites.
I am going to use a separate BEC with a small lipo to eliminate maybe another possible cause, as maybe the ESC shut down. At least then i should be able to glide it in if i lose power to the motor.

What transmitter are you using?
Do you do range checks (I don't, but should...)

I Used To Have More Free Time!
If you've lost 3 planes due to loss of signal, I would suspect your TX, not your receivers. What was the light on the receiver telling you?

What ESC are you using? If you were using the stock one with 4S there's a huge chance you cooked it enough to lose control. BEC is great (and simple/cheap) security.
