Blue Skies Over Utah 2011, September 17-18
UTAH DLG invites you to the first annual “Blue Skies Over Utah” F3K contest, September 17-18 in Vineyard UT (just west of Orem). Sponsored by South Davis Modelers (AMA Club #1401). This is a beautiful sod farm field nestled between the shores of Utah Lake to the west and the spectacular 12,000’ peaks of the Wasatch Mountains to the east. Field elevation 4524’. Utah officially joins the “Blue Skies” series for 2011, making it a “4-corners” event with NM, AZ, CO, and UT.
With your participation, BSOUT will be a fully sanctioned two-day qualifier for both "USA F3K LEAUGE" Team Selection and "USA F3K TOUR" points. Experts and beginners alike are welcomed and encouraged. Full lunch and light breakfast snacks will be provided both days, plus coolers full of cold drinks throughout. Dinner will be provided at the field on Saturday evening for an additional charge (All you can eat Cajun feast! Local crawfish boil, corn on cob, shrimp, sausage, etc. $10 per head). 8:30AM pilot meeting with first flight shortly thereafter. Task list, taken from the standard FAI F3K tasks, shown below. Standard throwout rounds will be calculated in the preliminaries, with top finishers advancing to the flyoff rounds. Awards will be given to the top 6 finishers of the flyoffs, and the top finishing sportsman.
Entry fee $40 to cover costs of food & drinks, prizes, AMA sanction & insurance, portable restroom, etc.; plus some land owner gratuity for letting us use their lovely property.
Vineyard Sod Farm is the location (MAP) (GPS: 40 18’ 13” N, 111 45’ 15” W). Take I-15 to the Orem "Center Street" exit (#271). We apologize in advance for all the road construction in the area (I-15 core proejct). Temporary lane splits can be confusing and cause you to miss this exit. Be sure to stay in the RIGHT HAND lanes when they split so you will be able to reach the exit. HERE is a short video to clear this up. Overnight camping is permitted at the field (self-contained, no hookups), and we plan on having lots of fun evening activities at the field. Conveniently located near a major metropolitan area, there are also many affordable hotels/motels, restaurants, and services of all types nearby. The field will be available for practice and clinics on Friday September 16th.
UPDATED DIRECTIONS TO THE FIELD: It appears that the little section of 400 S between Geneva Rd and Vineyard Rd is under construction as well. So follow the detour signs around it. When you get back to 400 S turn right (east) onto it, then make a left turn onto Vineyard Rd, then proceed as normal (as shown on the map link above).
Please pre-register in advance by posting here or sending me a PM. Include your full name, state of residence, Tx frequencies, and competition class ('Open' or 'Sportsman'). Also please pay in advance via PayPal to UtahDLG@gmail.com, or PM me for other options. Nice to have that all done in advance to avoid the last minute hassle and money exchange at the field. Registration officially closes Sunday September 11th.
AMA membership required for all participating pilots. On-field signup will be available, but better to do it online (HERE) before the contest date. Be sure to bring your AMA number with you.
Please familiarize yourself with the F3K section (rules and tasks) of the 2011 FAI Sporting code (HERE).
NOTE: If you are using the "Airtronics SD-10G" transmitter within a certain serial number range, please have the RF-Board updated as per the Airtronics service bulletin HERE. No mandatory recall has been issued, and I will not enforce it either. Just strongly suggesting it for safety and peace of mind of those using that Tx.

PS, we have scheduled 3 days in a row of perfect DLG weather, so bring a jacket for the nights, "or a PARKA if you are from Arizona", and some sunscreen.
The site is hugemongous, and depending on the winds, you are gonna have to really earn a 2:00 flight.
For the Colorado guys.

And Dave R, if you can swing it you're still welcome to pylon race with us the weekend before. Not sure what you'll do with all the time between weekends, but...
Speaking of bugs at the Sod Farm, last Saturday while I was there and other times as well, the mosquitoes seem to like to hang around the cars but I can't remember them being a problem on the field and I can't remember of ever coming home with a mosquito bite.
I don't think all the bugs flying around are mosquitoes, I think some are midges and other aquatic insects. By September most of the bugs should be gone; unless September turns out to be July, because it is still between March and April around here now.
