Idea

building an rc boat?

A few days ago I was rating some videos on YouTube of peoples home maid rc boats. After watching about a dozen or so I decided to see how much something likes this would cost. So I set a limit to not spend more then 200 dollars. I went to my computer and went on towerhobbies and started my pretend buying spree writing down ever price. After about an hour or so of figuring things out and crunching number hears what I came up with.

AquaCraft marine brussless 45 amp esc = 47.49

Great planes deans female ultra / standard female adaptor = 5.49+5.49

AquaCraft brussless 6-pole marine motor = 59.99

Water cooling jacket = 1.79

AquaCraft motor cable couple sv27 ul-1 = 11.99

Associated factory team cos esc heat sink = 3.99

AquaCraft drive cable w/prop shaft assembled sv27 = 12.99

Rudder assembly = 21.49

Total 170.71

Notice I didn't have a prop listed this is because I don't know how to figure out what kid of prop would be good. Also I was thinking balsa wood could be used for the hull unless I should use something else. Would this be a good set up?

I was thinking in the area of 25-36 inch and as fast as this set up wolf go. I was thinking about a deep v design and running two 7.2 volt 2000 mAh stick packs to provide the juice. I didn't include a receiver and controller because I have a set of them from a salvaged rc car.

25-36 long and fast, you need to be in the Rc race boats forum, just scroll down on the boats menu,

rc boat

Go over to Vac-u-boat site. They have a 26 1/2" mono that is deep vee and sharp looking but price tag hasn't been posted. That is perfect size for chop and am waiting for the price to come up to buy it.

You could build something nice and simple like a cracker box. Vac-U-Boat makes one or you could scratch build one easy enough. Google "cracker box boat".

I want to stay away of boat kits because I want to see if by building an rc boat I could pass it off as my senior project. Is balsa wood a hoot material o is their something better ?

I guess the questions that I really have are 1. How fast can a set up like that go? 2 . Is balsa wood a good construction material? And can balsa handle that set up?

Balsa is good. What you do is put an epoxy or fiberglass on the outside which makes it very smooth. From what i hear they are fast.
