Question

Mercon ATF as after-run oil?

An experienced flyer at my LHS recommended the use of Mercon automatic transmission fluid as a cost-effective substitute for after-run oil. Anyone else do this?

Cheers,

JD.

I would say no, i say this because there is alot more detergents in ATF then even standard oil. yes its like an oil but my personal opinion is not to. ask your self this will oil eat through a car floor if it sits there long enough, no. Will ATF, Yes.
just as im against totally cleaning the motors and taking out all the burt oil off inside, that helps it seal properly like when you break them in.

ATF is fine in your engines as long as it is not type F. Type F has friction additives in it for older Ford transmissions.

Marvel Mystery Oil is NOT air tool oil. And it will gum up after a while.

Marvel Air Tool Oil is a great after run oil. As is ATF.

Most ATF's, any or the air tool oils and Rislone (in the yellow container) make excellent after run oils. Marvel Mystery oil, sewing machine oil and gun oil do not do a good job as they are to thin but are better than nothing. Marvel Mystery Air Tool oil is okay. Definitely do NOT use WD40 as an After Run Oil as, if any rust is present, it will release enough of it to make a nice lapping compound inside your engine the next time you run it to accelerate the wear and tear.

What I use for ARO:

Quote:
The original Zoomspout Oiler is filled with 4 ounces of ConocoPhillips/Unocal 76 Turbine Oil- a superior general-purpose lubricating oil. A flexible, telescoping, non-conductive plastic spout extends from 7" to 13".
