Mechanical failure during Bin Laden raid


I have often been asked in this fatalist hobby of ours, "How come you lose so many planes to mechanical failure? You don't see this with real aircraft."

To those people I have always said that you see it all the time, but I suppose the lobbies that be do good work of keeping it out of the public psyche otherwise air travel would only be for the most intrepid of travelers (which is not good for business).

A NavY FRIGGIN SEAL CHOPPER FAILED WHILE EMBARKED ON ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL MISSIONS OF THIS COUNTRY'S WAR ON TERROR. HOW'S THAT FOR A PRIME EXAMPLE???!!!

I will say no more.

I suspect that the chopper took a few rounds that we don't know about and will never know about.

It could have happened that way, anything is possible, and if its mechanical, it will break.
I seriously doubt it. Whoever was in charge of this mission sent the best equipment possible, and the guys/girls that preflighted the helicopter went over everything with a fine tooth comb. Nothing was overlooked. Guaranteed

I lived that life for 25 years as a jet mechanic

Could have been pilot error- those guys are all chuckleheads

We have an old saying around work...

"If its got t*ts or wheels it's bound to give you trouble!"

Anything mechaninical can let you down, and murphy's law would apply in most cases, ie. that it will fail at the most inappropriate time, regardless of how frequent or complete the maint. schedule.

I suspect pilot error. The aircraft was attempting to terminate to a hover after the inbound flight. There were no details of the "mechanical failure" described, because they hadn't had time to think up an excuse. Would they have attempted to terminate to a hover if they had cockpit indications of mechanical failure? It's more likely pilot judgment or something like settling with power which is pilot error. Regards

So right Dorme

We may never know for sure; the elephant in the room is always that crumpled mass of jumble laying on the ground (or seabed) that someone has to explain for. Enemy fire? Friendly fire? Mechanical failure? Pilot error? Any one of the above right?

But when my planes go down for mechanical failure I always get the look like I have some 'esplainin' to do! Not fair LOL.

I thought it was already stated it rolled on its side on landing? Probably pilot error. It wouldnt overheat even in 120 degree weather unless the cooling system was messed up.

From some pictures I've seen it looks like the tail hit a wall.
