Hobby King Pearl EPO Glider Thread

Has anyone ordered one of these? Looks like a good price. Real close in size to the Kinetic 800. Use your own parts.

Last month I was considering this, mini swift or the Kinetic 800. I ended up getting a PNF Decathlon. FWIW the Kinetic 800 looks better and the control surfaces are bigger in the pictures.

Mine came in yesterday. I'm quite impressed. I started fitting things together and found the quality very good. The wings are held together with strong magnets along with the canopy. The canopy magnets may be a little too strong! Its hard to remove. A tab of tape at the rear will help. The instructions call for 5gm servos but the HobbyKing 3.7 servos fit perfectly. My only complaint is with the included folding prop. It's quality is very good but the shaft size is 2mm. The AX 1806 motor that would be a perfect motor for the Pearl has a 3mm shaft. I'm going to try the HobbyKing 1811-2000 motor. The mounting adapter fits the firewall holes perfectly. The 1811 is a little short so mounting spacers will be needed. I have ordered a Turnigy 2211 from HK but will try the 1811 until the 2211 gets here.

The control surfaces are not cut out so this could be used as a chuck glider! The hinge indentations are there. Once I cut the ends free, I'll see if the hinge areas are of good quality. If not, I've got hinges!

Here is a video of wippo76's Pearl 780

The instructions specify the COG to be 3 cm from the front edge of the wing. Using that, the plane seems to be nose heavy on a test glide. My flying weight is 182 gms using a 1811, 500 mah 2S, and 3.7 gm servos. Are you using the 3 cm COG?

I did some more test glides. There was a light breeze and the Pearl floated beautifully so the COG seems to be right on at 3 cm.

the ailerons look more like flaps where they are located. Do they work well that far inboard.

This a a very cool and cheap little glider!
I found the response of the aileron quite ok, combined with the rudder it controls very well. Maybe the elevator is a bit small for my tastes (or I should increase the throw a bit).

Anyway, I have experimented with different batteries, added a landing gear to take off and land on gravel and even fitted small cam on it and it always flies and glides very well.

Here is a video I made with it:

Aerial Video from Pearl Glider (3 min 31 sec)

The only problem I have is that there is no vents to cool the electronics, it is fine on a 2S lipo but if using a 3S lipo I have to remove the canopy. I tried cutting some vents but I think they are too small.

What actually comes in the box? It says that it includes hardware, building tools, folding prop with prop adapter & spinner. What exactly are those hardware and building tools?

I'm new to ARF so bear with me.

I fly a RTF Cessna 182
