Bringing back the Bug DLG

Just down to the final details on my Bug DLG. I love the wing design - very easy to build and strong. I brought the carbon to the tips for strength during those slope 'ground-rolls'.

- will be using x2 tower pro 5gram servos, faux micro spektrum, and either a Losi 200mah or 100mah nicad.

Looks nice, is this a kit or did you build it from plans? Got any more specs?

The Bug is/was an HLG V-tail mosquito class glider designed in 2001. You can buy the plans online and the parts are easy to cut by hand.. A while back a swedish website had the autocad file for free.. - I had the parts laser cut for precision. There is an old yahoo group that has a folder with modification files such as the X tail/DLG mod. I can post the links when I get to my laptop. This plane is super light at 4oz and under. I've gotten my Alula Evo to catch a couple thermals (pretty heavy compared), so I know this thing will thermal off of a fart given the chance.

Bug Bit

OK, it would appear that The Bug has bitten and I am thinking about the purchase of a set of plans. What are you finding your raw material cost to be running for a Bug build? (if you have that figure handy) I would like to know just how much I would be getting into before I toss out the $ for the plans. A good ballpark figure would be great, thanks.

While researching this glider I came across this - https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...65#post6633911

It would seem that there are no "free" plans, least wise not any legitimate ones anyway. Which was the reason I was wondering what the build cost was from someone that has built one, not being able to see the plans and know what is needed to build one. I did find a BOM that was dated 2002 but I have no idea how accurate it is so pricing out material could be iffy at best. (can anyone say for sure that the BOM on yahoo groups is the most current one?) I would hate to purchase plans, even with a reasonable price at ~$10, only to find out I would be ahead by just purchasing something like an Elf.

RCM magazine sold the plans and I think the mag folded but they still sell plans.

Thanks for the info. My only trouble is that my scrap box is overflowing with foam and not a splinter of balsa to be found. So for now, I'm stuck with having to purchase everything off the shelf so to speak. Still think I'm going to go for it, after all, no one said building with balsa was cheap....

There are others to consider as well though.

Yea, I dropped a line for the plans on that on too. I have built an upsized version of the Depron Dynamite out of $tree foam. Glides real well but got the tail wrong. In the process of redoing it with a V-tail. Won't be all that good for DL but sense I got way too much paint on the wings and got it heavy I'll do what I can to make a sloper out of it. (that was an $8.00 build less paint and electronics) I think the Bug or the Mimi will come in a bit over that. But that's OK as I haven't built with balsa sense the early 80's. Looking forward to it. I really like the Bug design. It looks to have a low parts count and a good place to "re-wet"my feet in the built up wing arena.

I spent $15 + shipping (all flat wood included) to have the Bug laser cut. The boom was $2+ from cstsales.com, and the dowel, CF strut, and covering (new glue etc) came from my LHS for an added $16 or so.

It may have been cheaper to just cut the parts myself, but Dave at http://dpcmodels.homestead.com/ is a master at laser cutting kits from plans. If you have any paper or autocad plans, you can just send them to him and he will cut out the parts in a week.

My buddy has an Elf,,, which is waaayy cool, but this summer we are going to have some thermal competitions to see if the home brew can take on the CF queen.

---My bug is now done - waiting for the wind to die down here in IL to give her a toss. Videos soon.

have to finish the BUG!

I got the plan from RCM about 2 years ago. I was about 50% done when my back went south. I will still finish it and use a light High start for launch. Or a simple SAL on small slopes.
