1936 Flying Aces Stick

Here are a pair of F. A. Sticks I built for the SAM R/C speed 400 event. The blue and yellow bird is a 75% reduction and the purple one is scaled at 80%, I can't believe how well the climb on a direct drive 400 size can motor! Using a 1000 mah 2-cell lipo battery pack and a GWS 7x4 narrow blade prop.

Nice looking planes. Did you cut your own ribs or buy laser-cut?

Construction method

Both models were scratch built, hacked the ribs out using a templete Lots of wire to bend but it was .047 so not too tough. Wheels are light ply disks with thrust bearing centers.

Hey, there's familiar territory - built one of these full sized when I was in college. Flying Models did an article on it and since it was so simple, I and some friends drew our own assembly drawing, and built it by committee (I did the wing). Had a very worn out Testors (McCoy) .19 RC for power. I don't remember how it flew - the only thing I remember was we had trouble with ground handling the first time out (wheels toed out), had to quit that day. I still have the rib template, and was recently thinking of doing it again for electric since it was so light for it's size.

Here is the original, thanks to Planeman, if anyone is interested in building the 1936 Flying Aces Stick.

Soft landings,
