Hmm, how to describe this?

The turnstile works by reactive phase shift vectoring. This is a fancy way of saying that the elements "fire" at different time intervals. Imagine the tips of the antenna going hot in a rotational sequence. Nice and circular. Now imagine two side by side pairs going hot together instead. The resultant vector is linear. Changing the thickness of the wire disturbs the firing sequence and makes it look more like the second case.

How would this work on the Thomas system that has 2 antennas ? Would it give longer range than the 2 dipole antennas that come with the receiver ?
Thanks Marc

It could. What the turnstile does is limit loss of signal due to random drop outs. While this often means longer range, that isn't necessarily the case all the time.

Alex -

Is there any issues with covering the Turnstile or the dipole 433 antenna wire with something like nyrod?

I would like to experiment with a couple of the antennas - but need the structural support of tubing....

You can cover the turnstile with little penalty. A standard dipole will react a bit worse, but not much. Just don't support it with anything metallic or carbon fiber.

Hi Alex, once again thanks for sharing your knoledge with us

The turnstyle goes horizontal on the plane, do I have to lay the Tx antena horizontal too ? or it is fireproof to polarization missmatch?

See Ya

Yes, your TX antenna needs to be flat too. Horizontal polarization is better for distance anyway

O.o Glad I read this, I was going to use a Turnstile Antenna on my dragon link RX laying horizontally. For my VTX I was going to use a bluebeam SPW antenna if I can figure out how to mount it properly, which I don't think I will be able to do. If I can't i will be using a Vee antenna, so you are saying that I am going to have to mount my Vee antenna horizontally as well?

I built a turnstile for my Funjet and its a little too big - what will happen if i shorten the elements to about 80% length ?

i have just made a turnstile, but not sure if i have made it well enough, is there any way of testing it, other than flying with it ?

It won't work. The length is determined by 1/4 wavelength calculations. Changing the length changes the frequency it's tuned to. Making it 20% shorter would move it from being tuned to 433mhz to ~541mhz.

Mod DL dipole

I would like to mod my original DL 1/2 wave dipole into a turnsile if possible. I dont know what the coax oHm is and I watched the video twice and didn't see Alex mention a specific length for the coax.

Respectfully posted,
Scott
