Why is a switch mode bec esc cheaper than a regular esc?

Seems the switch mode esc can handle more servos, but yet they're less expensive. Specifically, the 60 and 80A escs. At least the ones I see on Horizon's website. Or is one brand that much more expensive? If not, any ideas why? Mind you, I'm not complaining...just a little curious. (you know that saying: "if it's to good to be true, then it's not".)

It's probably simply because they're different brands. Otherwise, one may have some features that mean they can charge more.

Can you give us a link to the ones you're looking at?

Simple, the E-Flite in made in China and the Castle is designed and at least partially built in Kansas right here in the USA with American workers.

A switched mode regulator made with a part such as the LM2576 has only a few parts, the LM2576, diode, inductor and output capacitor. A linear regulator will most likely have two parts such as the LM7805 in parallel and an output capacitor. I would price the two solutions about the same. And the board space is about equal. Same-o, Same-o.

I checked the prices of typical components and the two solutions are within pennies and well under a dollar.

In addition, the CC Pheonix Ice 50 would probably be a better choice and for the same price as the E-flite 60A the CC Pheonix Ice 50 has SO MUCH MORE to offer.
Priced .04$ less then the e-flite it would be a no brainer for me. Using the CC link you can also set different current limiting and would probably get better performance out of the CC Pheonix Ice 50A then E-flite 60A

Eflite motor recommends a 60A esc.
And the one your suggesting is a 50A?

E-flite recommends the 60A because thats all they have in ESC. And that 60A rating is MAXIMUN where as the rating for CC Pheonix Ice 50, 50A is sort of the minimum as they have current limiting features and 50A is the most sensitive. My Ice 100A can go up to 175A or something like that on burst but the least sensitive is in the 150A.

But if you wanted to be really safe you could go with the 75A from CC and the extra cost is well worth it.

Thats what I ment.

PS: if you are buying the E-Flite 60A for an application thats going to be 50A or more then you are asking for trouble.

I had my 60A e-flite fail in flight from application that had 64A burst (take off) and averaged 30-35A during the flight.
