Exceed RC Rocket 1490kv motor

I am looking at ordering the Rocket 1490kv motor, what amperage ESC does that motor require?

HAHAHAH. Good luck.

What is your application? Are you running on 3s ? Which prop ?

I'm thinking the 40A on 3s should be big enough? 9x5 prop? maybe 10x5?
Just guessing.

Running this on a 41" Yak 54 w/ a 10x7SF to start but I do have a couple of other props ie 10x5SF and a 10x4.5SF to test

Are you flying aerobatic, 3D, or just flying around ? What is the motor weight ?

flying around w/ some mild aerobatic maneuvers. i'm too new to the sport for 3D flying but would like to do some easy stuff once i have the basics down. the motor weighs less than 100 grams, somewhere in the low 90's upper 80's i think

To be honest. I guess you got the "wrong" motor kv for 3s power system. 1490kv is too high for 3s, unless you go with 9" or at most 10" prop (motor might got really hot) with the draw back of not having enough thrust. In this case, you'd need 40A esc. 3s 1800/2200 mah is good, and 9g servos.

If did it again, I'd choose a motor 75 - 90g, ~ 1050 - 1150 kv spinning APC 11 x 5.5 or 12 x 6, 40A ESC (30A works fine with sufficient cooling), 3s 1800 - 2200 mah. Perfect power setup for aerobatic and later 3D if you'd like to, IMO.

Thanks for the input, i have a 40A ESC for the motor. I'll have to see how it goes, according to the specs on the motor the max voltage is 11.1 volts

Are we talking this motor?

Get this instead

or probally a better choice

or but the 840 kv is probally you

Are we talking this plane?

Things are starting to make sense now i'm guess the lower the kv means a smaller prop so am i correct in saying that i would probably need to run a larger 12 or bigger) diameter prop so not to over rev the 1490 kv motor. and that's why a 3s will not provide enough power to swing that larger prop

The lower KV will allow you to swing a larger prop for more thrust less speed. I don't think the 1490 will swing a 11-7 or 12-6 without cooking itself on 3s

That's true.
For the same prop and voltage, a lower kv motor draws less current. In other words, you choose a lower kv motor to spin a larger prop to get more thrust.
I believe your Yak 54 is either a 3D or aerobatic plane. 11" of prop should be good for that 41" Yak.
Your motor will likely cook with 3s and 11". Spend $20 and get another motor. Problem solved.

I know someone who bought 1 and what do you all think about the apc thin e 8x8 on 3S?
