Question
So I have a sheet of $Tree foamboard... what to build?
As the title says... I have a full 2X3 sheet of $Tree foamboard (and another leftover piece about a 3rd of that) and I need something to build around 3 JR digital micro servo's, a brushless 400 (1050kv) motor swinging a GWS 8040DD prop and a 20C 1300mAh lipo pack. (mostly because I just have the itch to make something)
I want it to be able to perform well in up to 10mph winds, and it cant be over a 36inch wingspan. Also, building it can't be too difficult as I have limited experience with scatchbuilding foamies. I usually just make profile trainer type models to play around with in the backyard. Although they always seem to fly well. I'm an intermediate level flyer, capable of flying trainers, warbirds, and sport/aerobatic models pretty well. I've been flying for a little over 8 years now. So, any suggestions, opinions or questions? Note: I'm up for a challenge, so as long as it isn't too tedious/aggravating to build, i'll probably give it a try. I've been thinking about adding a bi-plane to the hangar. It can be a profile or a full fuse design. |

Here are some examples of something I would like to try out.
Note: I just "googled" these.. they're not mine. |

I say give springers 1 sheet bipe or 1 sheet wing a try . the Bipe flys great and i have a wing started but watching his video it looks like alot of fun .

Not a bipe but will accommodate the 400 motor and your prop / servos. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...ghlight=funder
That one is a great flyer and very popular and could easily be made from a sheet and a third, Not a difficult build and will fly well. Just watch your tail weight or it can be hard to hit the CG. |

I will be getting a couple of those blue wonders in the near future though and I will definitely try making a flying wing using it. |

Update
So i've given it some thought.....
I want to build a whole lot more than just one hahahahaha! For now, i'm going to try a low wing trainer that I fly on my FMS (picture below) It seems very simple to make. From there, I will go on to build the funder and lightning, and the OSB, OSG and OSW... and well.. all of them eventually, lol. I will post updated pics of the low wing trainer as it progresses over the next week or two. (building time is limited) |

Update:
So i've finally had a little free time to get started on this scatchbuilt low wing trainer I mentioned earlier. I'm probably about halfway done, maybe a little more.
Ive got most of it together, the wing is completely done minus the pushrods and full length ailerons I need, including the dual aileron servos. I still need to work on the tail and servo's for the elevator and rudder as well. and then seal it all up, check the CG and give her some paint if the maiden goes well. Not sure if she will be getting landing gear or not but i'm open to suggestions on that one. I have a spare set of LG from a HZ mini supercub that would work great on this if I DO decide to use any. I'm still working out the wing/tail angle incidence because I don't think i've got it quite were it needs to be just yet. slowly but surely it will get there. I threw a few pictures up so you experts can take a look at it and see what you think of it. It's nothing superb, but for a quick build, I think it's halfway decent. ImagesView all Images in thread

I think I did "ok" for my FIRST try with no plans and just eyeballing a picture on my computer... no?

Looks pretty good, guy! proportions about right, tail empennage might be a bit small, but worth a try, can always add larger elevator and rudder if needed. finish her and fly without gear then add when you get her sorted. You will want to do glide tests over tall grass/weeds anyway to get cg and trims sorted/finalized, and gear just gets in the way when doing that. But it is fun doing real takeoffs and landings.

Yeah, I haven't added the actual hinged part to the elevator yet. I might make it just with elevator and no rudder function, but that's still "up in the air" at the moment. So far the CG is right on at 1/3 the chord width.
I'll update again once I get the ailerons and elevator all hinged up and the pushrods connected. She's pretty light so the 400 sport brushless should power here quite nicely. I may switch to an 8X6 prop though if the 8X4 is too slow for this type of airframe. The thrust is definitely there at about 24oz at 10A, but i'm worried about the pitch speed. I'm using a 1300mAh lipo pack so my flight times should be pretty good as well. AUW should be about 14oz when she's finished. Wingspan is 30" (fully symmetrical airfoil) I don't want her to be too fast anyhow because I want to be able to fly it in my backyard which is pretty decent in size. I can fly my E-starter in it so this one "should" be alright I hope. EDIT: I just heard from Jeff at HeadsUpRC and it has a pitch speed of 44mph with the 8X4 prop so I should be just fine. |

Well, got her pretty much finished now. Just a paint job and perhaps a canopy a little later.
