What happened to Circus Hobbies?

Sometime during my hiatus from the hobby, Circus hobbies must have faded from the limelight. When I came back, Horizon Hobby had taken over. Circus was, if not the only, then at least the largest JR distributor in the U.S. I think the reason that JR has been as successful as it has, is due to Circus Hobbies hard driving campaign to make it so! Was there an ugly battle between Circus and Horizon over JR products or did Circus stumble somewhere along the way? Circus Hobbies had many page ads in the hobby press back in the 1980 and on into the 1990 and offered many great kits and accessories.

Anyone know what happened? They had a nice Cessna L 19 Bird Dog that I always thought I'd like to build.

Horizon bought Circus. When they did, Futaba dropped Horizon as a distributor.

Andy, I don't see Circus Hobby mentioned exactly in Horizon's History, unless they were actually called Hobby Dynamics. I also wondered what happened to Indy R/C and now know.

I purchased my first rc equipment, 5 channel World Engines Expert and sweet stick from Indy RC. Looked through old ads at the prices of the MK model kits sold through Indy RC. Wow.

Jim Goad owned and operated Indy RC.
Bill Bennett of Circus Circus was the driving force of that business.

Was Bill Bennett of Circus Hobby's company actually called Hobby Dynamics? I still don't feel my original question has been answered.

I didn't realize it wasn't common knowledge.

I have a memory that the Circus-Circus casino sort of force him to change the name to break any possible association with that company.

I visited the place once in the early 1980's. I wasn't impressed with the selection or the in person service.

Yes. Circus Circus (hobbies) was also located at South Highland Rd, Las Vegas, NV.

... so they REALLY had to change their name... hence, Circus Hobbies Inc.

At any rate, the demise of Hobby Dynamics/Circus saw JR come out from under the Circus branding. Does your radio say Circus or just JR?
