Perth On the water RC

OK budding Perth RC Captains here is the spot to get organized.

I'll try to use the front page for pond and lake destinations similar to TSnakes PPS page.

These will need to be tested and confirmed.

Ahoy land lubbers

Well a big thanks to Metomorphisis for getting the interest started and the missus something else to mock me about.

I think the first port of call is the type or size of yacht we should look at to keep the competition close and the price down. From reading a few recommendations on the ShipshapeRC site I think we should look at either

HK Monsoon 900*1800
HK Phantom 1000*1890
HK Ocean Racer / Sailor 1000*2200 (only from Hong Kong)

The Monsoon and Phantom can be bought though AUS warehouse when available but they have been on B/O for about 7 weeks but allow for Xmas and CNY.

I'll probably bite the bullet if they don't get stock in the next week and go through Hong Kong and wear the extra $50..

Standard radios and rx's seem to be ok, an rx battery pack a few buoyancy (packing the hull with foam) and mast strengthening mods that are a must and we're off and sailing.

Any comments, thoughts and Ideas ya scurvy dogs

Pirate Phil as you have the most experience your input here is important.

I'd spend $170 on a sailboat just so I can use 'Yarr' in my posts.

Surely not my skyborne friend.

Sitting on ya deck chair along side a glistening lake but meters from the car should you need a refreshment top up. Walking to the Esky just near by as your yacht keeps a steady course to the next buoy. Feeling the cool wafting breeze coming off the local lake from any direction except the one needed for slope soaring (cuz if it was you'd be on the slope) or its was just too far to drive at the risk of a direction change. Having a chat and a laugh as your craft floats effortlessly across the water no worries of it dropping out of the sky, just heading over to the other bank. Retrieving your boat by bringing it to rest just at your feet not hunting through tic and snake infested bush listening and hoping for the shallow beep of your alarm. Not having to carry all your gear maybe some in pieces in one load back through the dunes to your hot car. Realizing that when you get home to repair that wing after a slightly hard landing that the glider you took hours or days to build won't be perfect anymore. Knowing that you had a great day of RCing whilst the fliers are stuck at home due to not perfect conditions.

Dam i wish I had my Phantom now..

hahaha, fear not me harties, I've got a bit o' sea time under me pegleg!

I used to do a bit of sailing when I was younger and sail winch servos cost an arm and a leg!

Nowadays if I want to hang out near or with an esky it's more likely to be thermal soaring or wetting a line

I'm sure they're fine but aren't they more an underpowered helicopter than a Yacht.

go-on stick a popstick and a hanky on for a sail and you can play too..

Hi Craig,

Great idea to start this thread craig.there must be a nice lake not too far away. the phantom, monsoon and legend all have similar specs. i think the ocean racer will have an unfair advantage as its quite abit bigger.
i too cant wait.. i will order a phantom next week from hk if none have arrived.
from what i have read, they seem pretty happy with these yachts. the smallish sail area on these shouldnt overload the winches and these days im sure u can get them cheaper.
I was talking to stew and andrew yesterday and they came up with a few possible sailing sites.
Hilaries marina
ocean reef marina,
butler lake...think ive seen bouys there
iluka lake...nice and close to me

also stew has a rc resue boat in the mail

Hey Phil

Great to hear, yeah I'll go with the Phantom as well. If Stews got a powered tug or some thing we could rig up some buoy / marker deployment and retrieval device or use Terry's quad copter.

As for the sailing spots it'll be great just to try them out. HK AUS have until next Friday to get stock or I'll order through Hong Kong. Than sailing by the weekend after.

looks like we'll have all wind conditions covered.

NO Wind: Powered
S -> NW: Slope
All others: Sail

Now it'll just be cyclone after cyclone or just rain for the next 6 months.

Chat soon

I'll just stand on the side and throw rocks..

Yeah after the ludicrous amount of money I spend at HK I'm a platinum member it then has the price at $94.90 plus $73 for postage works out about $50 more than AUS .

Check shipshapeRc for the "must dos" foam and plug some holes.

Can't wait to see them..

I was reading some of the top 10 rules and OMG I need to learn some boating terminology.

So get ready for some questions..

OH yeah I've been practicing on Virtual Skipper -5. very cool game / sim
