Build Log
Tug Boat, Patricia Winslow 1/4" = 1 foot
New build on the way. Sarted by drawing up a close enough plan and then carved the hull from sign makers foam which is around 6-8 pounds per cubic foot.
This is the plug, still aways to go before a hull is in a builders cradle |

I don't know Umi, Maybe 3 or 4. More if it the need is there.
I'll be honest, this hull is "close". not perfect, but good enough for the project needed. |

After a lot long hours here is a few pictures of some progress.
I decided to try something a little different...just to see. I purchesed some products from Smooth-On inc. They make casting resins and associated products for anyone that would like to make two of something. I wanted to try this because the smell of Polyester resins seem to REALLY bother me. It has been cold up here so had to come up with something with low aroma standards, as I was going to be doing this in the workshop, that also has to be heated by a wood stove. I feel it was a success. though there was cracking and the hull is tender near the top of the bulwark( because of being to thin). These products and procedure are easy to do and will make a hull relitively cheap. I have spent around $200. This is including the foam for the plug too. And I think I came up with a very useable hull of a 100' tug boat. Will be taking a two week break from the tug next week...to go work on ship models no less. ImagesView all Images in thread

Which Smooth-On did you use for the mold? And what's the grey stuff on the outside of the mold- reinforcement? Was there enough flex so you could "peel" the mold away from the new hull? |
