snowflake 22"-a trainer for 6400 brick

snowflake 22"-120 sq in wing area backyard trainer or sport for 6400 brick
i installed a 1015 brushless motor with a gear box p/n KR2BB by kenwaymicroflight.com
photos at my blog:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/member.php?u=161065
the motor with gearbox pulls a gws 6/3 prop with lots of power, and flies stable and responsive. 48.5 grams auw with a 160mah cell. boom is 4mm od cf from bp hobbies
built originally with 1mm foam from rcfoam on wing and tail, 2mm fuselage. kevlar strings under wing and around tail for rigidity. at tests, i learned that when doing landings, sometimes the wing springs down briefly, like a bird flapping its wings, so i added a pole above the wing and threads to make the wing more rigid. now with the pole and thread on top too, it no longer flexes its wing. but i learned that 1mm is too thin for this size, so 2mm is the way to go, and the weight gain is less than 2 grams.

Good to see another one from you, Phil. Your designs are so cool, so graceful and stylish. Things are loosening up here a bit, so I can get back to doing drawings soon. Would love to do this one, too.

thank you sir. i am of the belief that looks and performance not only can go hand on hand, but aerodynamics and aestetics work together. just looks at birds: every detail is taken care. no matter how small.

field tests

july 20: an update
with this plane i installed a 1015 with a kenway gear box and a gws 6/3 prop. but as i flies so well, am not going to try any other motor/gb. the power i get from this combination of motor/gb/prop is amazing, and needs less than 50% stick for take-off and climb, and cruises at 30%, and the 48gr auw makes the plane fly so slow that i can walk with it to my side, just buzzing near me so close that i could reach and grab it at any time. touch and go's, landings, catches, or mostly flying near me, is a fantastic sensation. of course, calm weather. with any breeze it becomes bumpy and even if controllable, is not the same relaxed flying. it is worth mentioning that it takes lots of downthrust-about 15 degrees. and recently it is making small funny noises that change constantly, like a cat purring. i checked everything but nothing seems wrong, so i'll keep an eye on it and see. could it be that it is really purring? cats do that when they are happy, so maybe?
and indoors, well, is same story. the slowest flying airplane i ever had. probably as slow as an ember or a vapor.
