continued from July conversations...

Mike, this is one interesting bird. I've been drooling over Glen's jet designs, then the GWS BN2, although not as cool, and then the Dornier 328. Pricey, but the kit looks easy to put together. It looks like Hobby Lobby beat GWS to the punch on this one, kinda. I've also been eyeballing these homemade foam conversion of cheapy foam gliders, but haven't had the time to do it.

If you look at the Dornier kit, you know, it's just pretty blocks of foam. Sure you get two motors and accessories, but having to pay $119 for one just doesn't feel right. It doesn't even look painted. $119... But AUW at 17 oz is pretty good.

Is Glenn commercial launching his jet designs? Didn't know that.

I have always liked the Dornier 328, especially the jet. I have considered in the past year of hanging a couple of fans under the wing of my trusty Ridge Runt (white T-tail in the pic) as it reminds me of the Dornier. I built it in 1995 and is a $19.95 kit from Hobby Shack (now Hobby People). It is a slope glider and I clippped the wings and added the OS .10. I have built 3 and have 4 in the box (thanks ebay). Within a week, it will have a Mega 16. My nitro days are over.

Car Crash

I was browsing through some pics and thought that you guys might like this one. A friend from work asked me to fly his new Tower Trainer 60 on it's maiden a while back. How difficult could that be? Well, my preflight was probably inadequate. As it took off, it turned 90 degrees, rolled to 90 degrees, and flew knife edge right into my car parked 100 feet away. The hood was up (we were using the battery for the starter) and it swallowed the plane like pac man. The pic shows where it landed untouched. Somehow it missed the hood prop-up rod. The big 60 sized motor hit the VIN dataplate of the Toyota and left a trademark dent. I was pulling balsa out of the engine area for 6 months. My dog was in the back seat as I put her in there to get her out of harms way. Had the hood been down, it probably would have gone through the windshield!

Had a good time flying today. But it was hot! Mike (downeym) sorry to what happened to your glider. But it was cool.

James, I still have your chair and I'm going to be out of town next week. Let me know if you need it back and I can have my wife stop by Mercer one afternoon.

Holy Cripes! Is it August already? I am normally Johnny on the spot with the new thread! Thanks Kip .
Had fun for the couple of hours I could stay , I hope to get to fly some tomorrow. As long as my honey do's are done.

Ready for LIPO's?

Where is Atl RC located? And great landing!

It is funny about the 328 Glenn is building. I was talking to him about building a high wing dual prop for two GWS Geared Motors and he asked me to sketch something up for him. Well, what I sketched was the 328 and didnt know it. I would have a hard time with forking out $119, for a plane that small and of foam. HL has some cool planes, but they are damn expensive.

Glenn, when is the 328 going to be ready? <<drool>>

I got a little to giddy with the hi-start. I was going for max altitude and the wings folded on me... it was actually a pretty decent break on one wing. I have already fixed it and it is charging for another try tomorrow.

The fuse is very nice fiberglass and made a great lawn dart! it was stuck in the ground and there was barely any cracks or anything!

I will try it again with the same wing, but worst case, I will jsut build the other one... no biggie!

Today was the worst luck I've ever had --- 3 mishaps with 3 planes. I know better than to try new configurations on windy daze. One was tail heavy. One was heavy heavy. And one suffered from an in-flight motor failure (it survived the deadstick landing, tho).

Mike - I few my E-Streak 5 more times (plane #4). Practiced cutting thru the wind and performing high-speed power-off dives just to listen to the whistle. I got some good stick time in a great plane that I'm usually scared to fly - cause it comes home so fast. The wind helped slow her down. Had two 14-min flights just putzing around.

I need a lighter, smaller, more powerful setup. I have four 8x1600 mah nimh packs that weigh 7 oz. but are limited on amp output (15 A max). I also have a couple of speed 480s and a Jeti Phasor 15/4 brushless (designed for direct drive of 40-ish oz planes).

I'd like to try a slow-flying aerobatic plane.

Any suggestions?

The ATL Club is inside the perimeter, just northeast of Harstfield, on Constitution Rd, just down from the Federal Prison, between the the State Penitentiary and Youth Detention Center. On the bright side, full scale police helis drop in now and then to practice.

It was lonely out at HM this afternoon. I guess the rain scared most people off.

On the plus side, I managed to fly my Edge several times without breaking the fuselage into multiple pieces.

Where are witnesses when you need them

See you next WE,
