any pocket jewelry scale will do that reads to1000x 0.1 grams, mine was $9.00 or so and works great.
I got it on ebay, I forget the vendor but any of these will do. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40 |

Why use that type over a traditional blade balancer? I'd have thought the 1 pictured would be more accurate? |

Try this. What is the best way to balance the 450 blades? Also, will any of the cheep HK blades work on the 4503d? |

Not at all, good to ask q's, there's more than 1 way to skin a cat!
Maybe the reply was because it was presumed/knew he'd already got the scales, saving him buying a balancer? I've got 1 of the balancer's I posted the pic of, works fine BTW. I've had blades that look identical to the HK one's but bought from elsewhere inc ebay. They worked fine but some were very heavy, and there was a lot of difference between the blades, they varied in weight between 32 and 35g. My Align blades are about 20 or 21g IIRC. |

Just checked the Align are 21g according to the website.
I bought some off ebay that were quite a bit out, heaviest being about 35g, the other was 32/33g. So I bought some more and managed to get some that were closer but they were still a lot out really. Other glass blades I bought were a little better at about 27 and 28g IIRC. I spoke to a retailer who explained a lighter blade would be better as it the heli would spin up quicker, but also be more responsive in pitch change. I did notice the difference of the Align blades when they were 1st put on, but I only do basic circuits and no 3D. Provided you don't crash, the Align's are nice, if you do crash, they're expensive to replace. |

No,because you stil need to find the COG of each blade and its easier to to know how much weight to add with a scale and a bit less set up time to just lay a blade on a scale also.

Yeah maybe. I can see what you're saying, not sure I agree entirely tho. I'm looking at it from trying to balance a plane laterally, although 1 wing is 15g heavier than the other, 15g in the wrong place will still leave it unbalanced. The blade balancer seems an easier and more accurate way of doing it to me.

Here's a few pics of some of the blades I bought and the differences in weight. 33g, 31g 29g and 27g. Others I got in the same batch were heavier, and I had to open all the packets to get blades that were close to each other, to then try and balance them evenly. 2g is a lot of tape, had to switch from clear sellotape to black insulation tape when balancing them. On top of that, the 4 blades pictured are really poor quality on the TE, pretty rough in places. They do work, but I'm not happy to use them really. You need spacers too as the root is too thin, the Align's are a perfect fit and don't need spacers.

I don't know about this. I would think a balancer would be much better as the balancing process puts the CG right over the hub. For instance, the paddle weights are probably exactly the same weight, but if you put one near the hub and the other one at the outer end, you're guaranteed to get a wobble.

Dont get me wrong here, everyone has a prefered method and mine isnt better than yours. Just wondering. If you guys want a link to some fiber blades that come almost spot on, let me know and I'll shoot the link to them. However these do need a shim. |
