Run snowblower on section of yard until it's cleared down to the grass.
Spread vinyl flooring. Profit. Roll it up and stash it in the garage if more snow is coming, though vinyl gets stiff and brittle in real cold. |

Yeah I don't suppose a Mossie on skis would look good.
I tried to fly a vapor in Edmonton one Christmas. At -40 it lasted about 5 seconds & battery quit. Down here in Vernon we have a bit of coastal influence,so it is usually above 20degF. |

LiPos don't like the cold. Below 50 F, their loaded voltage begins to fall off. The brand of LiPo matters a lot, too. Hyperion UM cells perform better in the cold than any of the other UM cells so far. The Mossie, Beast, Sbach, and Stryker 180 fare much better in the cold than the other UM ships, as their batteries are enclosed. Joel |

If you have your batteries in an inside pocket before use to keep them warm they should perform OK inside the Mossie - not a bad idea to swap batteries a bit sooner than normal because they're getting cold (then rewarm and reuse part used ones).

I have a feeling that my UM Stryker will be the weapon of choice this winter! It's an airplane that beg to go fast, you can close the vent with a bit of tape, and landing in the snow won't be a problem. Sadly though, no more boomerangs! (Unless it's the last thing you do before landing! ) |

There's a similar thread in this forum about making a runway, that one has to be portable though.
Long term a nice concrete runway sounds awesome, and I hear you on the simple end. In a previous life I at different times pulled concrete sample cylinders from large 800 yard parking lot pours on a few occasions, though that wasn't hand raked, that was multiple pumps and concrete flowing before sunrise in KC,Mo. You likely have a few birthdays on me. But if you pour concrete, will you overdo it and put in wire reinforcement? Actually if you ever pour it you're morally required to install driveway heating heat trace, so you can melt off your own runway from your garage 6 sheets of 4' x 8' plywood butted together would make a nice easy runway you could flop on top of the snow. Attaching them could be a variety of ways, from velcro to a small metal bracket along the thick face. Actually doing a bracket then the whole assembly could fold like a privacy screen, though more than 2 sheets gets heavy. One of the more durable varieties of house insulation sheeting foam might do the same thing, but would need to be staked down or secured somehow from wind. Very light and nicely paintable though. |

If you are talking winter flying here, brush off a picnic table and do carrier takeoffs. Just plop it in the snow at your feet for landing

I don't know how you guys up there do it . . . Down here winter just means your fingers get cold sometimes, but at least the bugs are dead.

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=11738 With a DX7 in there, it's just cozy warm! And if you're in the middle of a field, you can lay down your Tx on the snow, it's well protected. Only problem is: you really need a runway as anything you have to handlaunch is very tricky! |

Personally...I like flying in the winter. We don't get powder....the snow here is heavy an forms a smooth crust. It transforms the local grass field at a playground into one giant smooth surface for take offs and landings.
I keep all my batteries in a flat tin box (I think it was a gift box from a Lowe's Gift Card) in my back pocket so it keeps the batteries warm. Glued some velcro fuzz inside the tin box to secure the batteries and its like a cigarette case that slides in and out of my pocket when I need it. |

drive aileron servos with a single receiver channel?
I purchased a used Mosquito off eBay last week; it was advertised as having one faulty aileron servo. When I bind the plane to my DX7, indeed one of the ailerons goes "hard down" and won't move at all; all other controls appear to respond correctly. I just opened the plane up to replace the servo, and discovered that the servos are fine, but one aileron channel on the brick is faulty (when I swap servo connections to the brick, the "hard down" servo switches to the other wing). Since the brick is expensive to replace, I wanted to check with you all about another remedy I came up with - running both ailerons off the one operational channel. Here's what I'm thinking:
1) Install an Ultra-Micro Y Harness to connect both aileron servos to the operational aileron channel on the brick. Here's the part at HH: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=SPMA2002 2) Reverse one of the aileron servos using a Servo Reverser cable: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=SPM6825 I'll be interested in hearing if anyone has already done something like this, or if anyone sees a flaw with this scheme. Thanks! Steve |
