It's simple....we get national holidays because of martyrs....Christmas is another one, and it's not just for Government employees.

Jesus did more than MLK though...and to prove it we not only get presents, but we get chocolate bunnies too.

If he was alive today, what would King have to say about these two lugnuts ? Or would they even be what they are today if King was still alive?

He would most likely call them the N word and not in the brotherly way.

I agree with Aerogel's post . I beleive Dr King would see the "two Lug Nuts" for the Racists they are , and distance himself from them and their hate .

One gets the feeling if Dr. King was still alive those two never would have become famous at all. They are just there to fill the vacuum left when he died.

Dr. King did accomplish some good work, and history should remember him for that, however he also had some selfish traits as well, one in particular was his penchant for chasing women and cheating on his wife.

Personally I don't see the reason why his memory or aniversary should cause banks to close for the day and the mail not to be delivered.

I suspect Dr.King would have a much louder voice in directing the healing between whites & blacks.MLK speeches alway went straight to the heart...and were percieved as sincere & honest by all.

Our country will never be the same without such guidance...sad.

A respondent in another forum from King County WA says when the county wanted to adopt a likeness of MLK in honor of him as their logo, the King family kept them in court 5 years. King County was named for another man named King. And WA law makes civic use of historic figures exempt from royalties.

"I have a dream, that my survivors will make their living suing anyone trying to use my picture." I don't think he intended that, but that's what it's become. Counting the legal fees, even though the Kings didn't get to charge for the use of the likeness, adoption of the new logo cost them $1/2M.
