Welding sets for modelers..
Brad and I spent the entire day yesterday looking
for a small gas welding set suitable for modeling.
Welding supply houses, pawn shops, lumber
yards, parts stores, so on, so on...
It looked like no one had anything that was
what we needed or it was too $$. The big
welding supplier could fix us up for about $800.
Set, tanks, gas, rod, flux, goggles.
Today Brad went out riding his bike, nice
day, and checked a couple more pawn shops
we missed yesterday. On the way home he
stopped by Tractor Supply just on the slight
chance they might have something we could
Well, he hit the jackpot.
Worthington WK5500 ox, complete set, tanks
torch, hose stand, regulators, striker, and
some rods, assorted..
And it is just what we needed to do the stuff
on the airboat he is working on. Welding 3/16th
$54.95, regular price.
They are $8 at Lowes. The gas should last
a couple hours. You can use propane but it
is a little slower we are told. We will check
it out and let you know.
Considering the smallest bottle of O2 at the
welding shop was near $200, this seems to
be the way to go for what we are doing.
For what its worth..
Heres what Ive done..
I went to my shop foreman and got 100lb bottles..I pay for the gas there and return the bottles there..Because as a resident to get the big bottles of Gas ,oxy,acet,argon..it can run almost $300 deposit on the bottle..each bottle
smaller bottles can be had as well ,20-50lb'ers
..Ask a few friends,,even your regular mechanic..for what you'll be using it might be worth it ..
I bought one of those sets years back and yes you go thru the oxygen quite fast and it's expensive. I would run out at the worst possible time. Another thing was the valves, one big piece of garbage. You couldn't get them down far enough to do small work and the flow rate would constantly keep changing. Instead I just got a #1 tip for my big torch setup and have been happy since.
You'd be better off getting one of those portabe tank setups and get a small welding tip. http://www.harborfreight.com/portabl...nks-65818.html
If you want something smaller then you can change the whole handle and tip to a micro one. http://www.harborfreight.com/micro-s...kit-95671.html
Queried about that myself..still another 150 for testing, then filled..and at the dealers discretion they can be inspected and tested each time a guy brings them in
GB, that would be fine if we were planning on doing
a lot, but this is for one project maybe.
Those two items are near $400. Then there is
still the matter of gas.
We have two old tanks and they quoted us about
$500 to test and fill them, if they passed the
test. They are over twenty years old and have
been sitting out for over ten. Brad has an old
welding set, same age as the tanks and has been
stored of over ten years, the hose is not safe
and the regulators are in question.
Brad bought a case of O2 for $84 and that
should last us a long time. He will still use the
propane for light stuff and aluminum welding.
He bought a bead blaster today, can't wait to
play with it. The neighbor is a stone mason
and he paid half and bought a wet grinder so
Brad can sharpen and clean his tools. Brad had
a coupon and the blaster was on sale so the
neighbor paid fifty and Brad paid ten...
Brad has done some test joints with the little
welder and it really works well on the very same
stuff. Real silver solder is about $140 a pound
so the brass, $11 a pound, will be fine for our
If we were trying to do this to make money
and doing it everyday, we might have gone
a different direction, but this is just a hobby.
The blaster cabinet is really neat, like working
with nuke stuff...
