My first brushless (questions)...

I have a local shop willing to part cheaply with a Astroflight 020 "Corona" brushless 4 turn helicopter motor with controller. I've never had a brushless before, so I have a few questions. Please answer what you can:

1) I would like to put this motor in a WingWarrior Zipper plane. What's the difference between the helicopter and aircraft versions of the 020, besides the removable flange?

2) How do you reverse a brushless? Do I need a different controller, or is it as simple as reversing two of the three wires going to the motor?

3) Do I have to use a zero loss connector between the battery and ESC? (as recommended in the manual)

4) Can I remove the plug between the ESC/motor and solder the wires directly? I understand that there are very strict rules on the length of the wire between the ESC and motor...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

it has a kv of 3300.[rotations per volt] a bit high for direct drive

needs a gearbox.

i use 2mm gold connectors between controller and motor, just switch cables to change rotation
4mm gold between battery and controller.

1) just a special wind, probably 'torquey' which means it will swing a larger prop slower..
2) depends on what controller it has - Astro sensored controllers require a lot - switch power wires, sensor wires and retime the motor (physically) so it's usually not worth the effort. If it's a recent, sensorless, controller, however (OEM Castle Phoenix), then just switching 2 of the 3 wires b/w the ESC and motor will work.
3) No. Deans Ultra, Sermos, etc. will work fine.
4) Yes - just don't make them too long. If there are ONLY three wires b/w motor and ESC, then you're good in #2, above. In fact, the 3-way Zero-Loss that Astro sends out the new 020's with will in fact allow you to just reverse the motor by flipping the connector.

What kv range should I be looking at? I checked out all of the specs on the motor before posting this, but I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for in terms of kv. I was previously running a cobalt with a 7x3 prop on a Zagi. I had to run such a large prop because the cobalt didn't spin very fast, even without a load. I would like to stick to a 5-7" prop...

The motor is sensorless, with a sensorless (Castle) 35A controller, so it looks like I'm good on #2.

Sorry I'm such a newbie at brushless. Most of my motor/prop combinations have come to fruition by trial and error. It's just too expensive to use that method with brushless, which is why I appreciate your help so much.

Not sure if that controller is suitable to an airplane? Programming may be different.. use the Castle Creations forum to ask them if there's much of a difference..

never seen a WingWarrior Zipper , but if i was you i would do a search in foamies and park flyers as they go into great detail of what combo's they have in there zagi's, cuts out the trial and error.

Thanks for the input, guys... I'm leaning toward a Mega 16/15/4, which should be a nice, middle of the road start into brushless for my foamies. I don't want to run a gearbox, because I can't really run a larger prop with a flying wing. I'm going to stick with a relatively small (5x5, 4.75x4.75 or 6x4) prop and see how it works out.

I ran a 9x5 on my old Zagi. My new one is cut so I can swing a 12"..
