HL/Freewing SU-34 Alternative Programming

I'm on my 3rd (yes that's right) SU-34, a testament to both how much I like the aircraft and how poorly I seem to fly it. During the interval between #'s 2 & 3 I changed from radios from a DX7 to a JR9303. I also decided to attempt "full implementation" of the 360 capabilities of the AC so I dropped in a seven channel RX.

The best laid plans it is said, often go awry and I began struggling with the various available radio programming suggestions. Both the one in the manual and those found in the RCG and HL forums all shared one commonality, none of them seemed to work for me, so after talking to Scott in Tech Support at Horizon for the better part of an hour, I decided to abandon what had been tried before and simply go with a completely new and what I hoped would prove to be a more intuitive approach. In truth, all of the programs I saw, including my own, are very similar. The main difference in this program is that it allows you to TURN OFF the majority of the thrust vectoring with a single switch. The exception to this (and it's advantage) is that some limited yaw movement remains, acting as a very effective rudder substitute.

The beauty of this setup is that the TV nozzles will act as a rudder when the TV switch is off and fall into full elevator/aileron assist mode when the TV is activated. Take offs and landings can now be done with the TV OFF without sacrificing the advantage of having a rudder (even though no rudders exist) which as anyone who flies on windy days will tell you is a God send. In addition, I've programmed in some cross control aileron assist to help hold altitude in those steeply banked turns.

All in all I like the program, which fits my flying style. Try programming it into a free slot and give it a whirl. -- Happy flying

The following is how I programmed a JR 9303 on 2.4 using an AR7000 receiver.

Start with:

Vector control 1 to AUX 1 on RX
Vector control 2 to AUX 2 on RX
Vector control 3 Y'd to the Rudder (may be necessary to put a reverser in the line for the nose wheel)

Prog Mix 1:

AIL to AUX 1
Point 0 = -75
Points 2, 3, 4, 5 INH
Point 3 = 0
Point 6 = +75

Switch select = Mix ON the rest OFF

Prog Mix 2

AIL to AUX 2
Point 0 = -75
Points 2, 3, 4, 5 INH
Point 3 = 0
Point 6 = +75

Switch select = Mix ON, the rest OFF

Prog Mix 3

POS 0 = 0%
POS 1 = - 80%
MIX SW to Pos 1, all the rest in Pos 0
Offset 0

Prog Mix 4

POS 0 = 0%
POS 1 = -80%
MIX to Pos 1, all the rest in Pos 0
Offset 0

Prog Mix 5

POS 0 = 0%
POS 1 = +90%
MIX to Pos 1, all the rest in Pos 0
Offset 0

Prog Mix 6

POS 0 = -50%
POS 1 = 0%
MIX all to Pos 0
Offset 0

Set all D/R and Exp values to whatever makes you comfortable.
For me a good set of starting values are:

Ailerons & Elevators : Low Rates = 75% Travel & +35 Expo
: High Rates =100% Travel & +20 Expo

Rudder & Steering : Low Rates = 35% Travel & +40 Expo
High Rates = 75% Travel & +25 Expo

REV/NORM Servo Switches

Device SEL
Flight mode = INH
Bottom line all = INH

Wing Type = NORMAL
V-tail = INH
Mate = all INH

Type Sel = ACRO

Programmed as above, the "MIX" switch turns the "Vector Thrusting" ON and OFF
