If i stick the smaller 5mm wide LEDs on the outside of a reaper will it effect the air foil enough to notice? Better to build another and dremel channel and keep lights under the laminate?

Depends how you do it.
My opinion- lights on your everyday combat plane suck. You end up having extra stuff to fix when you finally get a chance to go night flying.
You can just tape the light to the bottom of the wing with the leds facing the foam.
This works out well on the bottom, recessed is optimal but if you already have it covered they work fine just taped on. The top of the wing is a different story. On top I prefer to run the light strips from front to back to try to disturb the airflow as little as possible over the top of the wing.
Ideal would be to recess the lights into the wing before it gets covered. Main reason is as you have already observed is to keep the airflow as clean as possible. Another reason is that adding lights (especially if you go crazy) can change the CG. Setting it up with lights and connectors from the getgo helps make sure you don't develop balance issues.
Night flying is fun. Night combat is a blast! What kind of flying do you intend to do?

Tom, I'll cut you a free demo F-22 to put lights on if you want to try it. I'm out of the full sheets but we can glue some wing tips on a smaller piece that should work. I just don't feel like messing right now.......that, and I don't have any lights.

Tempting... But something about that F22 profile plays tricks on me.
Did I ever tell you I've got ADD.
First I have to think about it.
Then I have to procrastinate.
Then I have to get aggravated at myself to do it.
That's why it took so long to get that F22 done in the first place
I may have to scrounge and see what lights I have laying around...

Dang it! I was going to see if you had anymore full sheets. I guess your source finally figured out that they shouldn't have been hanging those signs. Well, election day is near...

It is kind of fun. Here's a couple I did in St. George a year or so ago. 30 second exposures.
