Night Flying

If we're going to have a thread for build projects, formation flying, maps, Hobby City/King and everything else, we might as well have one for night flying.

So, post here for all things related to night flying.

So, since my long lost cousin "Wu" sent me some LED lights, I might as well throw them on a plane.

I know the light strips can be sectioned into three lights. Do you just solder right over the top of those little dots, or do you have to peel away something first?

Clean the adhesive off before soldering, and yes any 3 led segments may be used. Its a real pain though to solder these things up.

Is anyone putting lights on the leading edge of the wings? I would think that would be unhealthy for the life of the lights, but would really help with visibility?

Sorry for the stupid questions. I'm a noob when it comes to night flying.

Seen leading edge done (I think it was one of Lee's planes) Problem is the disruption of the airflow. Jake made a trench (with a soldering iron) one inch back from the LE, right between the LE and the spar. Hoping that it will be easy enough to see except possibly from straight on.

I'm liking the idea of a Night Flying thread. That's exactly the thing that got us hooked on this hobby.

As for the soldering- I just put the very tip of the iron in the center of the dot, then melt a really small mound of solder onto it ( just about the size of the dot). After that it gets easy, just tin a piece of really small wire and push it onto the mound with the tip of the iron... Easier to understand once you have seen it done one time. Jake did all the lights on the reaper pictured above- This plane and his slow stick are the sum total of his previous soldering experience...

I'm making some progress. Everything is taped over the surface for now.

I've got to get that sucker airborne first. I have a feeling I'll be combating my self for a while.
