Son's First Pinewood Derby Car (Rocket)

Take a look at what we have so far and then please give me ideas on how to really polish this thing up so it is really slick. Car wax maybe? Also any tips on how to make this thing fast would be great. Thanks... this has been a blast so far. My son and I have had a lot of fun making this together!

Edit: By the way. The Rocket Car won!!! My son was so excited... he won first place in his age group for design. Then he won first place for his group in the race. Then he got 4th place in the overall race. Then he got a big fat trophy for 1st place overall design Wohooooo! Good job Caydn!

i think that a coat of sealer or clear gloss would look great on it

Good call. I think I remember waxing mine when I was a kid :-)
Caydn and I just got done polishing the axles (nails) with a Dremel. As a kid, I know that I sanded the wheels on mine so they surface that made contact with the ground was curved but that isn't legal anymore I guess.

What a cool project. :-)

I built one of these a long time ago but it was a team project with kids that had no idea what they were doing. Good luck! Looks great.

yeah you can use dry lubricant. So, I am going to put some graphite on it.
I still have a scar on my left index finger from when I made mine in 6th 7th grade. I still have it actually. Helping my son with this one has brought back a lot of memories (especially when the exacto knife slipped and about cut the same finger that it did 20 years ago)

That's great! I've got two boys, 4 & 7. Hopefully We'll soon be doing projects like you and your boy. The time spent with them is so valuable.
