8 oz. AUW Wedgie with Johnson 250
Just got back from my maiden flight with a cut down Wedgie. Here are the specs:
Wedgie cut down to 30" Johnson 250 for the motor with a GWS 4x4 prop 2 cell Etec 1200 battery pack. (2oz.) Piixe 7amp Speed control GWS feather receiver GWS Naro BB servos Covered in Ekokote (no strapping tape used) Center ply keel down the middle AUW is 8oz.!!! The first toss was amazing. I have never tossed a regular Wedgie with the motor off to start a flight. This one did it just fine. Glides forever, applied throttle and away she went. Adjusted trim and decided that it was a tad too twitchy so I brought her back in to move the CG forward a tad and to decrease my ATV's. Back to the air she went, this time flying perfect. I have had quite a few wings so far and this one has totaly suprised me. Flight was at half throttle most of the time because it was so fast. The little .75 cent motor did great, barley warm after the 10 minute flight. Batteries were not even warm. I am so totaly stoked about this plane. Cant wait to get back out there to fly it again. Just found this page. The motors are now 2 for $1. What a deal. For the price of one GWS EDP 50 I can get 20 of these little gems. WOW

There are many different flavors of Johnson 250s. It would be interesting to see a direct comparison between this one and the one from Electronic Goldmine that many people are using. They may be identical, and theymay be quite different. No way to know from just looking at them.

yowsers! it looks awesome. do you have any spec numbers on the performance? estimated speed, amps, flight duration? what have you found as the best way to mount these with quick swap capabilities?

Dave Hederich should be able to chime in on some specs for this motor. I will make some estimates on the others. Flight time was around 12 minutes with juice to spare. It was not a full throttle flight, just short bursts of fun. Speed so far seems to be just a little less than my stock Wedgie, but much faster than my Mini Speedwing and Mini Twin. I am just guessing that the amps are around 5 to 6 in flight.
Now that I have the CG worked out I will bury the battery to get some more air to the prop. The motors should be very easy to swap out in the Wedgie, just clip the black ties and slide the motor out. This is one reason I chose to do this to a Wedgie because of the easy access motor mount. The receiver and speed control sit under the white motor cover. It was nice not having to bury those items as well. Servos were mounted through the bottom of the wing so that I would not have any servo arms sticking out either side of the wing. It went like a crazed monkey for about 6-8 minutes depending on left stick position Power was a j250 and 4x2.5 prop. I like your idea of going with 2 lipo's and a little bigger prop (more pitch) I was thinking of trying a 3x3 on three lipos just to see what kind of speed I could get out of this CHEAP motor, might still do it, well see. I got some more flights on this one today. Went great. I love the way it slows down. It is really weird seeing a 30" wing slow flying a few feet off the ground. Loops are huge and the roll rate is increadable. It also speeds up quite nicely. If I didnt know better I would swear that the wing has a tiny brushless in it. Verticle is good but not unlimited.
The wind picked up to about 10 - 15 MPH on the last flight. Was no problem, very solid feeling and really didnt get knocked around like my smaller wings. I have been keeping a very close eye on the motor and battery temp. Batteries are barley warm and the motor was about the same. It prob has a lot to do with my flying style. |

Dale, that is one great looking wing you made there. Great looking color scheme. I guess I will have to break down and buy some film for my next one. You using ecocote or econocote? Sounds like it flies as good as it looks too. The only thing that caught me off guard is the motor staying cool after a long run. I have the 1200mah etec 2-cell pack and using a 4x2.5 gets my motor very hot. The 4x4 you were using would even make it hotter.
Could just be throttle management but I'm wondering if maybe your motors are different wind or something? I ordered mine from goldmine and although I'm very happy with the performance, they sure run hot. |

Matt, they must be different. I got mine from the URL above, not from glodmine. I think a big help is not having any foam around the motor, so it cools much better. I also want to try to find some sort of heat sink for these motors. I wish some one with the proper equipment would do tests on each motor to see if there is any differences.
It really is staying that cool though, I only used full throttle in short 10 sec bursts, and kept the flight at half throttle for most of the rest. When it came time to bring it in I cought it and immedeatly touched the batteries than the motor. I left my finger on it for a few seconds because I could not believe it was just warm. The covering is econokote. Boy do I love that stuff, so much better than tape and makes the wings extremely rigid. It goes on with low temp and is so smooth. |

Dale, if you could hold finger on motor immediately after flight then they are definately different motors. I would do that once and be the fingerprintless man.
Econokote...I will go buy a roll and try that on wwing #3. Also liked the sleeve over the motor. Any details on what you used/did? BTW, I'm toying with the idea of making a twin wallywing. I already have the motors and a 20 amp controller. PLan to use an 8 cell hecell 1100 mah pack for go juice. Only problem is mounting those motors out on the wing. The angle makes it awkward to have clearance for props. Been toying with idea of mid wing mounts with slots for prop clearance. Other option is use less sweep in the wing so clearance for prop is not a big issue. Be sure to post some flight pics of your wing. |

I don't recall ever seeing a single post about anyone trying to run an M-100 motor in direct drive.
It sure sounds to me as if the All Electronics J250 is a lower Kv version of the Electronic Goldmine J250. That means it would handle a larger prop and/or higher voltage than the high Kv version. |
