Thanks Tom for the new firmware.
70 minutes is quite useless for me since my small #11 battery is dying and lasts at 25 minutes atm. (The replacement battery is on its way) I know that this new firmware only increases recording time to 70 minutes. However, has anyone upgraded the firmware and noticed any image quality improvement? |

More info needed. Is "a seller listed above" one of the sellers in post #2? Are you playing the movie from the file on the video card in your camera? If so, copy it to your computer and play it from there. Also, can your computer play other h.264 HD video smoothly? If your hardware is old, it might not have enough computing power to decode and play the video smoothly.

Here is my situation. My buddies and I fly our RC planes on the weekend. We bring our cheap little Compaq Netbooks (thank you Black Friday '10) to view the videos we take. It worked fine with my previous camera (HD Wingcam from HK), but as mentioned earlier, it doesn't work with the format of this camera. I'm looking for something that will do a quick job of converting the format to something readable on this netbook....so that we can view the videos while we're out flying. However, I don't want to sacrifice the HD video resolution. I can do all the editing on my stoneage Vaio desktop once I get home. What would you suggest in your expert opinion? Also, what's the best method to get the videos edited with music and such, and then playable on a 60" HDTV with the best HD video quality. I have a DVD burner, and I have the ability to stream things via my PS3. Sorry for all the questions, but thanks again for all the help. |

That way you can preserve HD quality, up to 1920x1080 quality. I just did this with video from a new Panasonic camcorder. You will need a quad core computer, and a Blu Ray burner. I am still running Win XP Pro on my computer. That is the way to get the best HD video to playback on that 60" HDTV. You should be able to play back the Blu Ray disc on a PS3 connected to your HDTV too. I assume the PS3 connects to your HDTV with an HDMI cable. |

When you say that works, do you mean it will play on your netbook? If so, then it was the .mov container that was the problem, not the video codec. You found the best and fastest solution for viewing in the field with no quality loss.

Is your PS3 connected to a home network? I have my XBOX 360 set up that way, and I can load/play most of my HD files directly from my PC to my 60 in. HD TV without converting or burning anything to disk., via the Windows Media Center hook built into the Xbox and my Windows PC. I don't know if the PS3 has similar capability or not, but it's a lot easier for home viewing than messing with burning/storing disks, especially if it's not content that you want to keep, send, or save in a DVD library.

I actually went with JB Weld. It seems nice and strong, though I did feel compelled to color the dull gray color with a black marker pen.
Flew my first flight with it tonight at sunset. It was so dark I don't want to judge the results just yet but it seemed to handle the low light better than the stock lens by itself (gathering more light?) |

I just attempted to update my #11 with the 70 minute firmware and after copying the file and disconnecting the camera, I proceeded to turn the camera on but I believe I held the power button too long and now the camera will not turn on. The red charging light does come on, however. I've tried pressing the reset button and removing the memory card with no luck. I believe my camera was using firmware release 2 because I updated it a few months ago to add the S/S/C functions. Has anyone ever heard of this issue, and could there possibly be a fix? Thanks!

If you click on the Vimeo link and view the video from there, the editing software is identified. But I'm pretty sure it's not time lapse, but rather just a simple speed-up of the native 30 fps video. Even WLMM can do that... up to a 64X speed increase as well as similar slowdown.

hi all,
I have purchased #11 camera few months ago, it was working fine until yesterday. It couldn't be turned on all of a sudden. I'm not sure how i broke it. I had it connected on my computer with usb cord for some time, then I unplugged it and played with the micro sd card for a bit(not sure why I did it), then none of the buttons work anymore. I can still charge it, the red light turns on when it's plugged in, but other buttons don't work in any way. I tried to reset, nothing happens. I tried to flashing a new firmware, but the it can't be turned on so I guess the firmware can't be updated either. So it basically died I guess. I am hesitating if I should just get a new one or should I open it up and have a check? I don't have any skills with electronics though, so not sure if that would really help. And if I buy a new one, is it possible to just buy the camera alone without all the accessories and manual instruction, with a cheaper price? ps, I've never did anything to Firmware or time settings before it was broken. stan |

It's been a couple of weeks since I used my #11 camera and I just went to put the micro SD card in and it won't stay in. As I remember, it is supposed to push in and then latch nearly flush with the exterior of the case. However it's no longer latching in place. I'm putting it in with the gold connectors facing up (toward the buttons on the top) as it doesn't seem to go in with them facing down. I've tried two SD cards with the same result.
Any idea what may be wrong? |

If trying re-flashing the firmware doesn't work, there's other suggestions in the FAQs (post #3) you can try, but some require some soldering skills. If none of that works, it may have gotten bricked somehow. You can contact you Ebay seller and see if there is any resolution with them.

New #11 HD Features - File Format Change Being Considered
Some features for a new version of the #11HD key cam are being considered, most of which are not ready for further discussion at this point, but one is the output file container format. The existing .MOV format has been with us from the start, and we have managed to find free tools to play and edit the files on most computers, but not without some extra work for many of you.
A possible change to the much more compatible .AVI file container is under consideration. This format is a lot more compatible with the majority of video players and editors as most of you already know. Note the video codec used would still be the H.264 codec to keep video quality high and file size low. Only the packaging and ease of use would change. Some concern has been expressed that this change could cause too much confusion with users. I have started a temporary new thread here with a poll attached to get as much user input on this as possible in a short period of time. Please go to that thread and voice your choice. Please do not post additional comments in that thread... I only started the thread to get a poll going and will be closing it after we get sufficient participation from our user base. You can only vote once for a given user name, so no ballot box stuffing is possible!. Thanks in advance for you participation! |

Hi!
I have a problem with my #11 HD cam, maybe somebody can help me? When i turn it on yellow light flashes one time like it should be but a bit faster than earlier. When I start a video filming it flashes 3 times like it should be, but when I press power button to stop filming, yellow light is on all the time and doesn't turnoff, not like before when it saved file and turned off after 3-5sec. If want to stop filming with other button, there nothing happens, yellow light doesn't come on. Photos I can take as before and there is no problem with that. The problem is only with videos, can someone help me? P.S. There is no problem with SDcard because I have 2 of them and it's the same! |
|
|
|
|
|
Any way we could keep the option to MOV in any case? AVI is a major pain in the neck to actually edit, and this is especially true on the Mac.
|
|
|
|

I like AVI because it plays directly on my tv set through the usb port. For me its the best way to preview the raw files and decide what parts to edit out.
Question, would this be a firmware change that could be installed on my 3 month old jumbo cams too? |

Hi,
Either .mov or .avi is fine and workable with available translation utilities as long as the compressed file sizes remain the same and the remdering artifacts do not get any worse. Better if they improve too of course Cheers, Jim Quadrocopter and Tricopter Mega Link Index |

Hi Tom!
Just voted (in my case, any format is good, I really don't have problems editing both formats). Do you know if among these possible new features are new body formats included? Like a bullet-shaped cam? I think this camera is really good, keeping the price just a bit over, it would be a very successful action camera and/or I think it deserves more than be just a keychain (or a fake key) body! I did just one test on my camera (don't know if you remember, I was going to use it as a rear cam for karting races) and it worked fine. Well, almost... the small FOV and wrong angle filmed just the sky and sometimes the helmets of my friends driving. I corrected the mount (I guess... will have to test it again) and added a wide angle lens. Hope it'll work!!! |
|
|
|
|
|
Update: As some of you know my camera would not take a charge from the supplied regular USB cable. It would only charge via the car charger.
I got a new camera and the NEW car charger at a better price from the seller. I got the new camera and car charger and special cable that comes with the car charger in the mail today. If I use the special CHARGE ONLY USB cable it would take a charge! So for anyone else having a problem with the camera taking a charge on USB you need the special CHARGE ONLY cable that comes with the new car charger |

First aerial video with my #11 cam. I haven't applied the Firmware 2 yet so the time is still there. How much of the exposure hunting will be corrected by the v2 firmware? I'd imagine the environment I was in doesn't make it easy for the camera, with a somewhat bright sky/clouds and a dark green ground. |
||
|
|||

There is something strange going on with your USB connection. The camera WILL charge from a standard USB connection with a standard USB cable... it just cannot also record at the same time. And it will use the camera's built-in lipo charge control IC. When you use the car charger cable, you bypass the special charging IC and connect directly in parallel with the battery. For charging, it is much better and safer to use a standard USB cable!

And you are right, your video has fast changing scenes of light dark area, so the camera's exposure control is not really hunting, but rather doing exactly what it is designed to do... adjust the exposure for a defined area of the video frame. I don't know if the camera uses center-weighted spot metering, wide area averaging metering, or something else. But it's not adjustable with the present camera and firmware. |

Yes, I understand that, but the advice you gave for others to only use the car charger for charging does not apply to them... only to you apparently.

I fully expected the Mac users to prefer .MOV files since that is a Mac standard. And in general, I expected the majority of Windows users to prefer .AVI since their system software has always worked with this format. One advantage that the .AVI format might offer (according to the developer if the flash memory is fast enough), is "seamless" recording, so there would be no gaps in the video like there are now between the individually saved clips (if they were joined together with post processing). But I can't confirm if this has been tested and proven to be possible, so I did not want to make that a consideration in the poll. So, the poll may boil down to just show how many users prefer Macs to Windows PCs, and the number who use commercial editing software that can load and edit both formats so they don't care. The best option would be to have a choice if that can be offered with firmware options. |

Haven't posted in awhile but I've still been here.
For my 2 cents .avi might be better for some of us "technically challenged" types. Seems easier to edit and work and it would drop right into the older MovieMaker6 without having to go thru a lot of extra steps. But to be honest, we've been working with the .mov format for long enough now that it probably isn't necesssary to change, we've all managed to "get along with the .mov format by now. Seems to be moot but I'd like to see .avi just for the WMM6 ease but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't happen. Here's a quickie of my latest, just some goofing around. Sorry for the choppy flying but I was on high rates and didn't realize it. Try to watch full screen and check out the description to get a little better picture of what was going on "behind the scenes )"

I think what you are saying will be the norm for users who have had the camera for a while and have learned to accomodate the file system. Remembering back to when you first got your camera, new users will be a different story, depending on what computer OS they have, and what their editing needs and software can accomodate. On the video, I can see some "pylon" racing going on using the goal posts for the pylons, but what was going on "behind the scenes"... I missed it. BTW, you guys must have really good depth perception... I'd have plowed into the goal posts for sure. I won't tell anyone, but I did see you cheat and cut inside the goal post at the end of that first clip! |

My little chasecam wing crashed upside down right on my #11 keychain and a lot of dirt got on it. The camera took it like a champe, it's just scratched and records flawlessly. That said, two black spots appeared on my lens that I can't get rid of. I have tried everything. Cleaning the lens with alcohol and a plastic pin, blowing compressed air right into the lens, blowing air into the opening between the lens and the sensor, etc. Nothing has affected the spots in any way, not even a little bit. I'm starting to wonder if this is a dust particle somewhere else... has anyone dealt with something like this?

1. The best one is there could be a speck of dust inside the lens holder module, between the lens and the CMOS array. It could have been there all along, not in the field of view until the crash moved it. You can fix that if you can unscrew the lens from the plastic holder. Older cameras had the lens lightly secured with a speck of adhesive, sometimes on top and bottom of the threads, that could be chipped off to allow the lens to unscrew, holding the square module tightly so as not to stress the soldered connections. You'd need to refocus the lens afterwards of course, so put a line of paint across the threads and fixed piece so you can get it back into the same place. On newer cameras, though, the lens is firmly bonded in place, and users have destroyed the module trying to free the lens, so be careful. If this is the problem, the only solution is to get an entire new CMOS/Lens module from your Ebay seller, and replace the bad one. But a look at the 25 small pads on the circuit board that must be unsoldered and resoldered without any bridging or damage may convince you it's not worth it! 2. Another possibility is the crash might have actually scratched the lens, in which case the only option is to get a replacement from your Ebay seller, then go back to 1, above, for a possible fix. I have a different camera with a slightly larger lens that had this happen, and the scratch is tiny and hard to see without a magnifying glass. It would be even harder with the smaller #11 lens. A slight scratch indentation on the plastic next to the lens opening was the giveaway. I'm still trying to locate a new lens for that camera (a JAZZ HDV178 if anone has a broken one they want to get rid of!) 3. The final possibility could be a speck of dust inside the lens itself between the separate elements that got dislodged in the crash. This is not very likely, though, and the resolution is like 2, above. Good luck! |

Focusing a #11 for distance
I just got my my #11 today form eletoponline365 (it took exactly 10 days). I just tried it out with an on plane video.
My long distance focus it blurry. The close up stuff is nice... I want to re-focus it for distance. I removed the glue in the threads and I can turn the outer ring easily. My question is, what direction do I turn it for longer focal length? Clock wise or counter clockwise? Any idea how far I need to turn it? I turned it out one full turn (I marked the starting point with paint dots) and will test tomorrow. I'm just wondering what your experiences were. Thanks. Danford1 |

I think the main reason for these two choices is due to the video processor chip. It does the encoding, and in scanning the firmware once I found many references to MOV and AVI as well as MJPEG and H.264. So I think the video processor is mainly set up with those encoding options available. But there were a few instances of MP4 in there, too, so who knows? |

Yellow Light issue (cannot get red light)
I've had my camera for two weeks and have not been able to use it yet. I tried to use it today but when i turned on the power button i got a yellow light. I thought I might have a low battery or something so i plugged it into my computer and when I powered off I got the red light. My computer no longer recognizes the device when its plugged into the USB. I also used a paper clip to hit the reset button but that didn't solve the problem.
Has anyone else here experienced this problem? Does anyone have a solution? Thank you in advance for your time and effort. |

this is the normal behavior for these cameras. according to the FAQ (first few posts of this thread) when you turn on your camera, you will see a yellow light. a short press of the record button with make that yellow light flash a few times and then turn off. this indicates that it is recording. here is no low battery warning (other than the annoying buzz we get in our videos) on these cameras. when you plug in your camera to your computer, a red light will come on, indicating that it is charging. when the red light goes off, your charging is complete. If you would like to access your memory card- plug the camera into you computer, then hold the power button. this turns on the camera so you can access the memory card. I'm not sure why the camera was designed that way, but that's the way it is. Please read the FAQ at the beginning of this thread... Cheers, Brian |
