Playing Flight Simulator Games with a Joystick + Flying RC Heli's in Mode 1

Dumb thread... but i've been playing a few simulator games lately... Wings of Prey, Apache Air Assault etc. using a Saitek Cyborg X. When i fly my Heli's I fly mode 1. On the joystick, yaw is twisting the joystick, and the airelon's are pretty much organic. Whereas on my TX, (as I don't fly Mode 2) my aileron's are separated. i.e. i hold the joystick with my right hand which does the ailerons, but on my tx this is normally throttle + roll in mode 1.

Will this lead to possible brain fades? Has anyone else done this before? I was flying my heli today minutes after playing Apache Air Assault and noticed i ALMOST thought the throttle was the fwd/back cyclic for 20 ms or so....

If you're doing both flight simulators and flying RC helis, that could indeed become confusing. Full scale helicopters have fore and aft pitch, and left and right roll, on the joystick. This allows for compound inputs on the joystick, such as forward pitch with a little left roll. When you fly Mode 1, your pitch and roll are on separate sticks, so I would think it could lead to, as you said, "brain fades". Since I know that Mode 1 is popular in Australia, you might ask around if there is anyone, say at the hobby shops, that fly both full size and RC. They would most likely give you a better answer as to whether they sometimes get confused when flying RC.

That is why I really want a set of rudder pedals for my full scale sim. It does confuse me - some kind of physical separation would make it ok. I don't usually fly helis on the full scale sims though - mostly because I can't. Without rudder pedals, you can't fly a full scale heli correctly - maybe if the rudder control didn't self-center.

A good force feedback stick makes a huge difference in helicopter simulator, especially if trim is handled properly by software (only one off the shelf software simulates this properly - DCS Black Shark). Rudder pedals are all right and big improvement, but unfortunately no one makes force feedback rudder pedals, so it's a bit different than real thing. TrackIR on top of it, so you have situational awareness.

I don't think full scale helicopter skills translate to RC flying, maybe flight theory, but not much else. I always say someone should start to make force feedback RC tx - it would make flying much easier!
