1 revolution and throw!

helios winglet , peg

hi,

i machined some mould's for a new throwing peg and winglet .

never used a winglet so i'm curious to find out how it goes.

tommorow i will build a helios kit and take some photo's along the proces and post them here.

i need to build a new plane cause my first one "died" 2 weeks ago.

at 40 meter high lost all control and dived into the ground...R.I.P.....

i happend with my 2 weeks old spektrum dx8 tx but it may be a battery failure too, i'll never now.

i put in some lead in the nose the evening before and that may "cracked" the solder between the cell's (+ and- soldered directly together without a wire to connect them)

as i flew the helios more and more , i put in more ballast , even at bright shiny day's with even the slightest breeze, and the cg relatively far forward .

it is amazing how much ground it covers and getting me into lift far away even if i headed another direction before , i had enough height to get somewhere else .

even setup like this it really shows even the lightest lift .

here are some pictures of the winglet and peg

first pictures of the build

hi,

i didn't get far today but the rest will come...

first i soldered the cell's together (500mah nimh, this balances the plane out)
then put a shrinktube around it and it's ready to charge..

shortend the wires of the hs45's to get a cleaner result afterwards and screwed them into the servotray.
the servotray brings a lot of strenght to the fuselage , because of the relatively large canopy .

enjoy

building the tail's

hi,

after cutting the tail's to get the rudder and elevator moving i cut out a slot for the horn's to fit in.

it's important to cut them all the way the bottom skin layer so the horn is well attached.
i used regular ca and microbaloons to fixate them.

torsion springs are made out of 0.3mm steel wire , 60mm long and bended 15 mm from end.

for the elevator i bended them 90 to eachother and for the rudder 180 because it get's more load's then the elevator.

i glued them as close as possible to the horn on the moving part to prevent deformation after some time.
also used ca to glue them.

here are some pictures

edit: i replaced the springs by 0.5mm thick ones , only one per side

hi,

i sanded the inside of the fuselage were the servotray will come , for better bondage.
then i inserted the servotray and battery and made sure the battery is hold in position but could be removed also.

then i glued the front part of the tray using ca and microballoons.

inserted the ballast tube and glued it with thin ca

now for guidance of the steering wires i glued in some tube's using 5 min epoxy and microballoons , this also fixates the rear part of the servotray.

then i attached the canopy using hingetape and glued in a magnet .
a screw is screwed in the servotray for holding the canopy

eh , the wing..actually almost nothing.
the wing i will be using has rds , so i just need to install the peg (in this case a winglet wich is already installed (see previous post).

so all i need to do is bolt it ont the fuselage...

You have Kits with wings without RDS as far i know.
Then it would be cool to get an impression how much work is to do on such a wing.
shurely interesting for anybody interested in your kits.
i am.

Hello Kristof,

Why did you used 2 springs instead of one for the elevator ?

Olivier

to spread the loads in order to prevent warping..

The double-L bend wire arrangement used in the Twister-II is another way to accomplish warping prevention, using only a single wire. Just FYI.

my first wing was build like that , but after a crash (lost contact with plane )
a removed the servo's , i will take pictures of that wing and explain how i did it, later.

2nd helios r.i.p.

hi,

lost a second plane today because of tx failure , now i know for sure.

here are some pictures of the new model that only lasted for 2 day's...

i wen't out for some throw's when it didn't had the aileron gap's sealed and you can immediatly hear the difrence.

i used 3 pieces of hinge tape for the job , 2 with sticky side up and the third on top , then cut lenghtwise.

really like the winglet , altough i need to get used to it , timing was not alway's perfect but it feels realy good , i think i can throw all day long without feeling anything .

that was rthe rx used now, first crash was with 6250 wich performed flawlessly for a year and a half with my jr tx.

i don't think my rx is the problem , it would be the tx...
