Brushed Motor Fwd and Rev Question


First time Eagtree user with V4

Searching forum returned no results, so hopefully one of you can help.

I want to install the logger in a boat that has a brushed motor and an ESC that allows forward and reverse. The V4 instructions specify the motor side red wire should connect to the positive pole on the motor. That pole becomes negative in reverse direction.

How will the V4 react? I am just logging VOLTS, AMPS, and MAH values. Will I get absolute totals or subtractions.......or a puff of smoke?

The boat has a car type motor and runs on a 2S-4900 mah Lipo.

HI Jim,

The eLogger should connect between your battery and your ESC, not between your ESC and your motor.

I searched the manual for the word "motor" and didn't find anything re connecting the red wire to the motor side. Could you let me know where in the manual you are seeing that? We need to correct if it it's there.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I did not read the instructions as carefully as I should have.

On page 2, last paragraph......."The red wires of the 'wire lead' version of the eLogger must be connected to the positive side of the load and source (normally the red wires). For measuring current and voltage during battery charging, it is ok to connect a charger to the ES connection, so that current is flowing 'backwards' through the eLogger. The eLogger will still measure current correctly in this mode!"

I mistakenly mistook "load" to mean the motor. The subsequent mention of current flowing "backwards" through the eLogger being ok made me wonder whether the mah would be subtracted from a prior total, and whether volts and amps would be graphed as negative values.

After seeing your reply, its now clear that with the eLogger between the ESC and battery, current will be flowing only in one direction, regardless of the motor's rotational direction.

I do have Sermos connectors between the ESC and the motor and between the ESC and the battery. But it would have been an error if I had put the eLogger between the ESC and the motor.

PS....is the "ES connection" in line 3 of my quote supposed to be "ESC connection"

I like the look of the points - had not seen that before. It's something we can look into doing. Any other interest?

Anything like this or close to this is very good. I think this way you can see more clearly the track. High altitudes with red colors or anything like this.

This is on our list of things to dig into. The developer here who does this is on another project, but I hope we'll be able to dig into it soon.

I'm considering one of these on a 10S 3000W system. With all the chatter about avoiding long battery leads, does the V4 introduce enough inductance that I should worry about my ESC? Do the Hall sensors take all my problems away......

Hi, I would be surprised if the eLogger introduced enough inductance to cause you any issues. The resistance through the hall sensor itself is approximately 0.0001 ohm, if that helps.
