The former flying site was near a mountain that is covered in trees and houses and therefore useless.
The best site is about a 20 min drive away but it is 'owned' by a club of which I am not a member. Another very good slope is in that same area but needs the wind to be from the North. This is my favorite.
The red sloper started life as a light RTF powered RET brushed motor thing, and it evolved into a weighty aileron equipped, film covered slope missile.
The other one is a quickie using a wing I was given. It goes well too.

Thanks demon. Gliders sure are the way to get long flight times, a stiff neck, a sunburned face and eye strain... but I love 'em.

Whiskers. . . I found a possible solution for the stiff neck, try flying the gliders from a beach chair!

the red and white plane directly behind the blue one on the right..thats the model i want my project to be..if i can get on like it thats were i can mold the parts to get my own..and the bigest question about it is the design, is it more of the motor flying it or is there important aero dynamics in its design??

The red and white plane that looks a bit like a Cessna is called the Cessnot because all my friends say it flies in a very 'Not Like A Cessna' way.
The plane is a very spectacular performer. It can jump off the grass runway in about its own length and climb vertically, very fast, to any height, limited only by visibility.
It is extremely aerobatic. with a great roll rate, and has neutral stability and has no self-righting tenancies, it just keeps going in whatever direction it is pointed.
Powered by a TP 2409-12 swinging an APC style 8X4 prop, it has almost 2 to 1 power to weight ratio and the thick symmetrical section wing gives great lift and gentle stall.
It's a fun plane, but only for an experienced pilot.
Kirk, what you need to do is get a flight sim on your computer and learn to fly on that while you build a BluBaby or Oshkosh Special and if you can master the building and flying of that, then you can start thinking of the next step.
But get into it. You have a year, but time goes fast. Right now you know so little, you don't know how little you know. (we all start like that)

i downloaded FMS took me a while to get it working ...it will be a while before i can actually use it . im gonna try to use a xbox controller.. thanx for the info

Kirk, when you buy your radio make sure you can also use it with FMS.
My Grandson got good with FMS and when it came to flying a model... No problem, he could fly.
Flying an RC plane is one of those things that is hard at the start and easy when you can do it.
Mind you, doing something perfectly is never easy.

Thermals


Hi Whiskers:

I see that you like sailplanes. I was wondering; I read articles about soaring and they talk about thermals, but do not explain how to catch them. Although I enjoy powered planes (electric) I love to power down and see if I can get the plane to soar, what am I looking for in the flight pattern that denotes a thermal?

Hi Sean,
Mainly what I do is to trim the glider for the best glide and fly it as accurately as I can and to observe the way it travels through the air.
If one wing gets lifted I assume the lift is on that side and I turn towards the high wing. If there is lift there the glider will rise and the trick is to circle in the rising column of air.
Sometimes the tail gets booted up and you need to come around to the lift that has bubbled up behind the glider. At other times you'll just fly into lift and see the glider start to rise rise, so circle and try to center the plane in the lift by turning towards the wing that wants to rise.
The thing is, the plane is sinking relative to the air at all times. It the air is rising faster than the glider is sinking then the glider will rise. Therefore the lower the sink rate the better the plane will thermal.
With a powered plane that's not an ideal glider you can have on just a sniff of power so that it sinks very slowly and then fly it pretty much like a glider.
