A couple pics of the canopy frame mounted and sliding freely. Also one of the VQ canopy resting on the frame.
Time for some lunch. |

Thanks bud for following along. I have a tailwheel question in a moment that I hope you can share your thoughts on....
...but first...I wanted to mount the wing. The (sparse) instructions show the dowels located by measuring the wing LE and the front saddle bulkhead, and by some miracle your measurments are identical your dowel should plug in nicely and seat the wing. Sadly I don't have enough confidence in my ruler to get that right so I mounted the wing and tacked it with some small spots of CA. Then carefully drilling with a long 1/8" drill bit I went in through the firewall and drilled right into the wing. I also drilled 1/8 pilot holes for the 1/4-20 wing bolts, which I upgraded from nylon to metal. Once the holes were drilled I opened them up accordingly for a couple pcs of carbon tube (1/4" ID, 5/16" OD) and epoxied them into the wing LE. Added blind nuts and expoxied them in as well. Overall the fit is pretty decent. |

Think the kit supplied elevator joiner will pose a problem!?
Easily fixed. |

OK, to the tailwheel. A lot happens in the back so it may be a little trial and error to get things situated correctly. Rumaging through my retracts box I found a small lightweight air up/dn unit that I'll use as the retract mechanism. See attached pics. The unit has plenty of throw, in fact too much throw so I'll have to create a 'stop' so it doesn't fold up high into the fuse. I posed it in the position which clears the rear of the opening and leaves a little of the wheel exposed per the real aircraft. I used the kit supplied strut...do you think the geometry looks convincing enough?

I ran into a similar problem on my p-51 tailwheel. Since I have the strut catch a wire to close the doors, the wire keeps the unit from retracting to far. One thing that is nice about the electric retract after a few seconds it shuts off and won't put a drain on the rx batt. I was trying to figure a way to bend the strut so the wheel wouldn't go so deep, as it is my geometry is a little funky, I notice when it turns to the left it also leans to the side a little. Nice work on the canopy, that something I would like to tackle in the future!

Didn't work on the corsair over the weekend or yesterday. Did a little today to mount the air cylinder to control the canopy opening and closing. I may use a small tank for it in the end. I did today just to test it's operation. I will still need to tweak it once I get the cockpit and dash in place.

Since posting the pictures of my mock up tailwheel I haven't been crazy about it. The more I looked at it over the weekend the more I realized it just wouldn't do. so using a thread over on rcu as inspiration I've spent the past couple afternoons building new tailwheel set up and should have it finished tomorrow (?), here's a couple pics of my progress.

Finished off the tailwheel assembly today by adding the retracting mechanism and geometry and adding an air cylinder to operating the retraction. I added a gusset to support that cylinder brace. Here are some pics of the assembly.

And a few pics of the assembly painted. First sprayed with a self-etching primer, then sprayed with testors model master flat white. I also sprayed the wheel hub at the same time.

To mount it in the fuselage required a new sub former added at the front of the wheel well opening. Here's a couple pics (sorry it's blurry). On Monday I'll tackle the doors.
Hope some of this is still interesting or helpful? |

Following your steps
Hey LDM - I found your great post on RC Universe that talked more about your panel lines and airbrushing. I found the uniball gel pen and am starting on that today.
I also saw your dummy radial paint job and decided to re-paint mine. Wow what a difference. You really know how to maximize the scale on a Hangar 9 plane - thanks for sharing everything. You guys are off the charts with after-market ARF improvements. Stictlyscale I can't believe what you've done on this post. Your recent work on the tail wheel - did you fabricate that all by hand - (your soldering, etc)? You should start American Chopper for RC scale |
