Build Log

MSB Drakken

Ok
I purchased this MSB Drakken http://www.mbs-rcmodels.se/ kit on RC Universe for half the price, thank God
Not an easy build: lot of little balsa sticks, the quality is very good but I think a good set of plan will help the builder a lot.. I made some major mistake , but " c'est la vie"
The Drakken is fit with mini retract : air up and down.
5 2200 20C cells ( cheap) and a 70 mm Het fan and a Typhon 2w30
70 Amps controller .
5 servos: rudder, tracking, retract valve and 2 for elevons.
The intake are soft plastic , i added carbon tow , trust and exaust tube are 1/64 plywood roll( not in the kit)
I made 3 access doors under the fuselage : fan, cells and retract and servo tracking in the front.
I will have small door for front landing gear and just opening for main gear, I have some nice spring strut for the weels.
here fews pics, the fairing @ the back is not scale, I plank the former instead forming balsa....
I will cover the plane with light fibreglass .60 once .......
hatch latch is done .
Cover bottom with .75 once fibre

Yesterday I glassed the bottom with .75 once cloth and today the top part with .60 once cloth. I thinned the epoxy ( 30 minutes) with 50% denatured alcohol.
Total weight RTF: 1.6 kilograms ? 3 lb. 52 once

The bottom just need sanding and primer the top need one more cat of epoxy with micro-balon. Next time I will use only .75 once fibre

I finish the front doors. They will close with a small wire across. The strut will push them open.

Nice JC, there's nothing like a wood kit

The weight seems pretty good ... have a look at the Austrian Saab Draken scheme (red/white).

JC, Have you tried the following pour la peinture de le chefs d'oeuvre dans l'hiver ?

Use Tamiya water-based acrylics from the small jars (the bigger 3/4oz jar)

http://www.acesofiron.com/tamiya_color.htm

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGR03&P=7

For airbrush use they are diluted with alcohol or better Tamiya thinner:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGR26&P=7

These have almost no smell and can be sprayed indoor with a simple airbrush. They are very thick in pigment and cover very well!

Later you can touch up with a simple brush & the same paint. You can even apply the first coat with a brush, and the second (thinned) with an airbrush ...

I have (almost) not used any other paint over the last few years ... The MiG-21 is painted almost entirely in Tamiya red x-5, some airbrushed and some with a brush

Try them out, you wuill love them ! You can probably find them locally at some (rc-car) hobbyshop.

A Bientot, HWH

Only clear coat and done. Little bend in the canopy , I received like that!
The Drakken is very light, I will fly this week maybe with 5s 3000 Turnigy Cells
