just down the road...

Found a nice field today. Owned by a fan of all types of model hobbies who welcomes all, here's what they have:
  • tag frequency control system
  • safety fence between parking, pits, & runway
  • close cropped grass runway, relatively free of divots
  • electric, glow, gas, & heli's
  • flightline shelter decorated with crash damage and broken props
  • figure-8 offroad car track
  • moat-like pond for slow boat operations
  • indoor model train shop/display, outdoor large-gauge track around moat
What they don't have:
  • membership requirement
  • dues
  • AMA requirement
  • certified "Robert's Rules of Order" types running around trying to organize everything
I've passed this field a few times, and never asked about flying requirements, just sat and watched a few times. When I heard that they're open to anyone with their own supply of common sense, I took out my plane and had a bunch of youngsters 'n oldsters asking about the camera, duration, price, etc. There were maybe 30 or 40 people there this evening.

Simply amazing. I feel like the bank teller gave me too much money and told me to just keep it. Here's a few shots of the field.

Trains are in the steel pole building; car track is to the left, boat moat is to the right. Not sure if anyone runs boats or floatplanes from the pond.

Highest yet. Corn & beans to the east and north, water to the south, fields and houses to the west. Didn't spot any planes down in the crops.

Nice bit of photoshop trickery, there Karl. You are the master.

Yeah, like I believe that fairytale, storybook flying field really exists. Oh yeah, and it's just 10 min away!

Hey, did I mention my 11 acre "fairway" grass back yard has eternal thermals? Yeah, just toss and away you go, no motor needed.

You are one lucky guy to have such a fantastic facility. That pond is just ready for a Soarstar on floats.

No photo edits other than contrast, no exaggerations on the description of the field either. Well, it's ten minutes away once the car's loaded and I'm already rolling down the road.

Any doubters, c'mon out and we'll break some props!

David, I'll spend more time talking to the regulars to see if anyone flies floats. I have my 'Stick on floats (http://www.rcsites.net/karl/aircraft/slowstick2.html). The pond is up several feet due to two years of above average rain, but I though I saw an old table near the shore.

That really is a fantastic field.
You have got some jealous people on your hands, my friend.

Who keeps the place up? Since there are no dues, where does the upkeep money come from?

Sure wish we had a place half that nice here...

BTW, I exaggerated just a little on my back yard. Once we get the house built, it'll be a 2 acre back yard, no fairway grass (it's rock and dirt at the moment) and no magic thermals. It does empty into a 15 acre lake, though, so floats are on the horizon.

What little I know is that the landowner is retired, comfortably well-off, and apparently followed the old advice, if you build it they will come. I hope to spend more time there just talking to the regulars.

Two acres can be vast in Slowstick terms. Speaking of thermals, I maxed the settings in FMS, winch-launched a sailplane, and couldn't get it back no way, no how. The reality wouldn't be a dream, more of a nightmare!

Wow that is a generous fan indeed! I don't think there is any class of recreational modeling that is not supported at that facility, incredible. Given the opportunity to have such a field to fly at is indeed a privilage, I hope you enjoy many years of flying there.

Can you believe the lawn parking lot? ... gimme a break.
